Authorities have found several cases when skimmers—counterfeit card-swiping devices—placed on retail sales machines and ATMs all over central Ohio. These gadgets are quite difficult for consumers to recognize since they are designed to replicate legal card readers and almost look exactly like the actual one. Police showed a seized skimmer intended to mimic the keypad of a card reader during a recent operation.

Skimmers run by gathering user provided card information and personal identification numbers (PINs). Criminals then utilize this  data to access victim accounts, therefore allowing them to make illegal purchases and withdraw money.

Following an advise from the U.S. Food and Nutrition Service earlier this March, the ODJFS has advised Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants to be extra cautious. The federal alert highlighted a concerning trend where thieves specifically target SNAP benefits through the use of skimming devices.

Victims of such frauds have options. Those impacted by these skimming incidents can claim reimbursement, according the ODJFS. Those whose benefits have been compromised are urged to notify their local county department of Job and Family Services, therefore expediting the process of recovery.
