Dayton, Ohio – Drivers traveling through school zones in Dayton are being reminded about the city’s photo enforcement program and how its speed cameras operate.
Speed cameras have been installed in every school zone across Dayton as part of an effort to encourage drivers to follow traffic laws and reduce unsafe driving around schools.
The cameras operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They are synchronized with school zone schedules so they recognize when the lower school zone speed limit is in effect.
What happens when a possible violation is detected
When the system detects a speeding violation, a flash will alert the driver that a photograph has been taken. However, detection by the camera does not automatically mean that a citation will be issued.
Every recorded violation is reviewed by an officer before a citation can be issued.
City officials also emphasized privacy protections connected to the program. The cameras do not record people inside vehicles.
Drivers who receive a citation can review video connected to their own violation through a public portal. The available footage includes the flashing school lights, allowing the driver to see the conditions that were in place when the violation was recorded.
Motorists also have the right to challenge a citation. Each Notice of Liability contains instructions explaining the process for contesting it.
Dayton says the broader purpose of photo enforcement is to create safer streets rather than simply identify violations. The program is intended to encourage drivers to voluntarily obey traffic laws and reduce crashes, particularly in locations where speeding and other unsafe driving behavior can create greater risks.
The city’s message to motorists is straightforward as they travel through school zones and other areas where safety is especially important: “Slow down. Pay attention. Help keep our community safe.”
