“I wake up to that news but not that news”: Ohio teacher terminated after expressing disappointment that President Trump survived assassination attempt as employer condemns ‘calls for violence’

Ohio – A short video posted online has ended a career and sparked a wave of debate after an Ohio educator lost her job over comments she made following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. The clip, just seconds long, quickly spread across social media, drawing sharp reactions and eventually leading to her dismissal.

The teacher, identified as Corinne Baum, had been working at a child care center in Ohio when she recorded and shared the now-viral video. In it, she reacted to the news that Trump had survived the attack. Her words, delivered casually but clearly, immediately caught attention.

“Man, there’s been a few creators on here saying that like Friday or yesterday could have been the day and then I wake up to that news, but not that news,” Baum said. That line — especially the phrase “I wake up to that news but not that news” — quickly became the focal point of the backlash.

A Video That Triggered Consequences

Baum’s video did not stop at that remark. She went on to suggest there might be more behind the event, adding, “We’re going to have to pay really close attention to what they’re trying to actually distract us from.” That comment fed into a growing wave of online speculation, as some users began pushing claims that the assassination attempt had been staged.

Those theories gained traction in certain corners of the internet, though officials moved quickly to shut them down. Karoline Leavitt addressed the situation directly, rejecting such claims as unfounded. She called them “crazy nonsense” and stressed the importance of sticking to verified facts.

“It’s very important to us that we get the truths and the facts about this case and any case out there as quickly as possible to dispel some of that crazy nonsense running rampant online,” she said. She added that transparency was key, urging people to rely on confirmed information instead of speculation.

Charges Filed and Investigation Underway

Meanwhile, authorities have taken firm action against the suspect. Cole Allen has been charged with “one count of attempt to assassinate the President of the United States, transportation of a firearm & ammunition in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony, and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence.” The case is now moving through the legal system as investigators continue to piece together what led to the attack.

The incident itself has drawn intense scrutiny. Questions about security, motive, and the broader political climate have all come into play. At the same time, the online reaction has shown how quickly narratives can shift once a story begins to spread.

Trump himself addressed the attempt in a way that surprised some observers. Speaking publicly, he described the experience as an “honor,” suggesting that figures who leave a lasting mark often face such threats. “I mean, you go through the people that have gone through this where they got ’em, but the people that do the most and the people that make the biggest impact are the ones that they go after,” he said. “Just take a look at the names here. The big names, and I hate to say I’m honored by that, but I’ve done a lot. We’ve done a lot.”

Employer Responds Swiftly

For Baum, however, the consequences were immediate and personal. Her employer, BrightPath Bridgetown Child Care Center, issued a clear and direct response once the video gained attention.

“Our organization does not tolerate and explicitly condemns any calls for violence,” the company said in a statement. “The comments made online by this individual are deeply inconsistent with our values. The individual in question has been terminated.”

The decision was swift, signaling how seriously the organization viewed the situation. While it remains unclear what Baum’s exact role was at the center, reports suggest she had ties to The Children’s House, which was later rebranded as BrightPath in 2023.

A Wider Debate Unfolds

The incident has now become more than just a single firing. It has opened a broader discussion about speech, responsibility, and the line between personal opinion and public consequence. Some argue that Baum’s comments crossed a clear boundary, especially given the context of violence. Others raise questions about how far employers should go in policing speech that happens outside the workplace.

At the same time, the situation reflects how quickly online content can reshape real-world outcomes. A brief video, recorded in a moment, can travel far beyond its original audience — and carry consequences that are both immediate and lasting.

As the legal case against the suspect continues and the political fallout evolves, the story surrounding Baum’s video remains a reminder of how tightly connected words, actions, and reactions have become. In a climate already filled with tension, even a few seconds of speech can ignite a chain of events that no one fully expects.
