Emergency shelter for men in Montgomery County to be operated by Homefull starting this summer

Dayton, Ohio – Montgomery County is preparing for a major change in the operation of the Gettysburg Gateway for Men Emergency Shelter, as Homefull, Inc. has been selected to take over management of the facility. The decision comes after St. Vincent de Paul announced in November that it would step away from operating the shelter by the end of June.

Ensuring Continuity in Shelter Services

The county, working in partnership with the Homeless Solutions Policy Board, acted quickly to prevent service disruptions. A formal request for proposals was issued shortly after the announcement, and a review team—made up of representatives from Montgomery County, the City of Dayton, and the Gettysburg Neighborhood Group—carefully evaluated submissions. Their top recommendation was Homefull, Inc., a well-established nonprofit with a deep history of supporting those experiencing homelessness.

“Ensuring that single men experiencing homelessness have a safe, secure place to go remains a top priority for Montgomery County, and we are committed to providing uninterrupted services throughout this transition process,” said Commission President Judy Dodge. “Homefull has a strong track record of providing housing-focused support and experience providing emergency shelter for single men. We are confident in their ability to serve our community with compassion and effectiveness.”

A Housing-Focused Model for Support

The Gettysburg Gateway for Men will continue to serve individuals from across the region without barriers or preconditions, maintaining its open-door approach. With Homefull taking over, there is an increased emphasis on housing-focused solutions and strong collaboration with local partners to connect people to the services they need most.

“This transition will allow for continued access to critical services while strengthening the shelter’s housing-focused approach,” said Dr. Victor McCarley, Co-Chair of the Homeless Solutions Policy Board. “We are grateful for organizations like Homefull that are dedicated to supporting our residents and creating opportunities for those in need.”

Homefull Brings Decades of Experience

Homefull, formerly known as The Other Place, has been serving the community for over 36 years, helping fill critical gaps in care for people experiencing homelessness. The organization’s mission continues to focus on providing shelter, support, and a long-term path to housing stability.

“Homefull, previously The Other Place, was founded over 36 years ago to fill a gap in our continuum of care for people experiencing homelessness. We recognized the need then, just as we do now, and knew we had to take action to ensure our community has access to shelter, support, and a path forward,” said Tina Patterson, Homefull CEO. “Homelessness is a complex challenge, and we remain committed to providing a safe, stable environment while working closely with our partners to connect individuals with vital resources and a pathway to long-term housing solutions.”

The county looks forward to working with St. Vincent de Paul and Homefull to ensure the transition is smooth and seamless, with the needs of vulnerable residents remaining front and center.
