Dayton Police Department to conduct sobriety checkpoints to combat impaired driving during St. Patrick’s Day festivities

Dayton, Ohio – The Dayton Police Department, along with the Combined Agency OVI Task Force of Montgomery County, will be conducting two sobriety checkpoints on Friday, March 14, 2025. These efforts are part of an ongoing initiative to reduce alcohol- and drug-related crashes, injuries, and fatalities in Dayton and Montgomery County.

Increased Enforcement to Deter Impaired Driving

St. Patrick’s Day is known for its festive celebrations, but it also brings an increased risk of impaired driving. Authorities are urging residents to celebrate responsibly and ensure they have a safe way to get home. Sobriety checkpoints serve not only as a deterrent but also as a method to apprehend drivers who choose to operate a vehicle while under the influence.

“St. Patrick’s Day is on a Monday this year, so we anticipate that the festivities will start Friday and continue throughout the weekend,” said Sgt. Gordon Cairns of the Dayton Police Department. “We just want to remind everyone to have a plan. If you’re going out for drinks, know how you’re getting home. If you’re at a friend’s house, consider staying overnight or arranging for a ride. The most important thing is not to drink and drive.”

Cairns also noted that patrols will be increased throughout the weekend, with additional OVI checkpoints taking place in collaboration with other agencies. He emphasized that this holiday tends to mark the beginning of spring festivities, leading to increased traffic and a higher likelihood of impaired driving incidents.

Plan Ahead to Stay Safe

Authorities warn that St. Patrick’s Day celebrations often begin early in the morning, leading to an increase in alcohol-related crashes even during daylight hours. Many people assume they will be fine after a few drinks in the morning but may still be impaired hours later.

The Dayton Police Department strongly encourages individuals to use designated drivers, ride-sharing services, or other safe transportation options to prevent unnecessary accidents and legal consequences.

“We definitely see an increase in OVI-related incidents during this time,” Cairns added. “People may not be prepared for how alcohol affects them throughout the day, and they underestimate their level of impairment.”

Residents are urged to take the warnings seriously and avoid becoming part of the growing statistics of impaired driving incidents. By planning ahead and making responsible choices, individuals can ensure their safety and that of others on the road.
