Dayton, Ohio – A troubling illegal dumping site in West Dayton will soon be cleaned up thanks to new funding awarded to the City of Dayton by the Office of Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost. The city announced that it has received a grant of $47,696, which matches the full amount requested to support critical cleanup efforts.
The funds will be used to hire a professional contractor who will safely remove a large amount of illegally dumped materials from the property located at 3800 Germantown St. The one-acre site has become a health and safety concern for local residents. The area currently contains discarded tires, demolition debris, and multiple bags filled with unknown refuse. This mix of waste not only threatens the well-being of the community but also harms the neighborhood’s overall appearance.
In addition to removing the hazardous materials, the awarded funds will allow the city to take steps to prevent future dumping at the location. Plans include the installation of concrete barriers to block vehicle access and the addition of surveillance cameras to monitor the area for any illegal activity moving forward. The city expects the full cleanup to be completed by early 2026.
Team Effort to Restore and Protect the Community
The effort to remediate the site is being coordinated through the combined work of several City of Dayton departments, including the Office of Sustainability, as well as the Divisions of Waste Collection, Community Engagement, and Housing Inspection. Together, these teams are working to ensure the cleanup is not only thorough but also sustainable in preventing future problems.
“Environmental clean-up requires a team approach, and City staff are committed to doing what it takes to get the job done,” said City Manager Shelley Dickstein. “We appreciate the essential resources provided by the office of Attorney General Yost to remediate the site and help prevent future problems.”
Dayton is among 27 Ohio communities selected to receive the Shine a Light on Dumpers award, part of the Attorney General’s Environmental Enforcement initiative. This program aims to assist local governments in combating illegal dumping and keeping neighborhoods clean and safe.
With this grant, Dayton takes another step forward in addressing environmental hazards and demonstrating its commitment to protecting the health and beauty of its communities.
