TechCred awards over 7,000 credentials to Ohio workers during January application period

Columbus, Ohio – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jim Tressel announced that 566 employers were awarded funding through the January TechCred application period, opening the door for 7,681 tech-focused credentials to be earned by Ohio workers. This announcement also marks a major milestone for the program—over 130,000 tech credentials have now been awarded to more than 3,500 employers since TechCred launched in 2019.

Program Strengthens Workforce Across All Industries

TechCred is designed to help employers upskill their workforce by funding short-term, tech-centered credentials. Whether it’s a large company or a small business, employers from all industries can apply for up to $30,000 per round, with a yearly cap of $180,000. These credentials are essential for helping employees gain the skills needed to meet the demands of an evolving economy.

“The strength of Ohio’s economy depends on a skilled workforce,” said Governor DeWine. “Through TechCred, we’re empowering businesses to invest in their employees and ensuring Ohioans have the tools to succeed.”

In the January round, industries receiving the most funding included manufacturing, educational services, and construction, highlighting that this program is not limited to just one sector. It shows that workers in nearly any field can gain value through tech-oriented training.

Lt. Governor Jim Tressel emphasized the flexibility of the program: “TechCred empowers business owners to select the training that fits their employees’ specific needs. This ensures that Ohio’s workforce is not only skilled but also strategically aligned with the demands of the local economy.”

Focused on Future-Ready Skills

The program continues to gain recognition for its role in helping Ohio’s economy adapt to technological change.

Lydia Mihalik, Director of the Ohio Department of Development, noted the long-term benefits: “Ohio’s growth depends on a workforce ready to meet the demands of a changing economy—TechCred makes that possible. By expanding access to in-demand training, we’re equipping Ohioans for the jobs of the future while helping businesses stay competitive today.”

Mike Duffey, Chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education, also praised the program’s impact:
“TechCred demonstrates the power of short-term credentials in preparing Ohio’s workforce for high-demand jobs. Hitting yet another milestone with the January application period reinforces the importance of this program.”
