RecoveryOhio to host Mental Health Day to support Ohioans at State Fair

Columbus, Ohio – Governor Mike DeWine’s RecoveryOhio initiative has announced a significant event aimed at raising awareness and providing support for mental health issues. Mental Health Day will be celebrated at the Ohio State Fair on Friday, July 26, 2024, offering fairgoers a unique opportunity to access valuable behavioral health resources and information.

A Day of Support and Education

The initiative, spearheaded by Governor DeWine, emphasizes the importance of mental health support across all communities in Ohio. “Mental health challenges impact Ohioans from every city, town, village, and community across our state, and we need to do everything in our power to connect people who are struggling to supports that can make a real difference in achieving recovery,” Governor DeWine stated. He encouraged the public to participate in the fair’s activities to better understand and utilize the resources offered by RecoveryOhio and other state programs.

Aimee Shadwick, Director of RecoveryOhio, shared her enthusiasm for the event: “We are excited to host Mental Health Day at the Ohio State Fair. Our partners have put together a range of engaging and educational exhibits that highlight the resources and supports available to Ohioans. We hope everyone comes out and learns how to support mental health for themselves and their loved ones.”

Engaging Activities and Vital Resources

Upon arrival at the north entrance (Cardinal Gate), visitors will be welcomed by staff from RecoveryOhio, the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS), and the Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI). The first 5,000 guests will receive a free bag filled with educational materials and promotional items. Directors from each agency will be present in the morning to greet attendees, providing a personal touch to the educational outreach.

The Bricker Marketplace Building will host booths from OhioMHAS, ODI, and the Beat the Stigma campaign. Here, experts will be available to discuss services and benefits, distribute literature, and guide visitors on connecting with community resources in Ohio. The ODI booth will highlight their Mental Health Insurance Assistance Office, offering resources for both employers and individuals. The Beat the Stigma booth will feature an interactive gameshow-style setup, where attendees can test their knowledge of mental health issues and confront common misconceptions.

Additionally, the fair will include detailed information about Ohio’s 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. A special quiz at the OhioMHAS booth will challenge visitors to distinguish between myths and facts about the 988 Lifeline, which offers round-the-clock, confidential support for individuals in distress.

For anyone in crisis, immediate help is available by calling or texting 988 or visiting 988Lifeline.org for 24/7, confidential support. This service is designed to provide prevention and crisis resources for individuals and their loved ones, as well as best practices for professionals.
