Ohio rolls out multimillion-dollar program to improve safety measures on campuses statewide

Columbus, Ohio – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has announced a $7.5 million allocation to enhance safety across 28 colleges and universities throughout the state. These funds aim to improve the security of students and staff, reinforcing the commitment to creating safe environments for higher education.

“Ohio remains committed to ensuring our colleges and universities have the resources they need to make their campuses as safe as possible,” stated Governor DeWine. “These grants will allow us to continue this important work so students can focus on thriving in their studies, chasing their career goals, and reaching their full potential.”

Enhancing Campus Safety Through Strategic Investments

The funding comes from the FY2025-26 Campus Safety Grant Program, which received legislative support via House Bill 2 of the 135th General Assembly. The Ohio School Safety Center, a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, reviewed and approved the grant applications in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

The grants will support various physical security projects, such as installing security cameras, upgrading lighting, adding fencing, improving door locks, and deploying portable surveillance trailers, radios, and drones. These enhancements are designed to address vulnerabilities identified through campus safety assessments.

“I commend Governor DeWine and the General Assembly for continuing to prioritize campus safety, which is a critical part of a successful college experience for all students,” said Ohio Department of Higher Education Chancellor Mike Duffey. “These grants provide continued support to our campuses in their efforts to provide a safe learning environment.”

Andy Wilson, Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, emphasized the importance of safety in fostering academic success. “It is important to create an environment on our campuses where students feel secure and can focus on learning. Without question, these grants will improve safety and security across the state.”

History of the Campus Safety Grant Program

To qualify for this funding, institutions conducted thorough security and vulnerability assessments to identify areas needing improvement. Since its inception in 2021, the Campus Safety Grant Program has allocated approximately $17.5 million, with previous funding rounds announced in August 2021 and November 2022.

The program is part of a broader safety initiative spearheaded by Governor DeWine. In 2019, he established the Ohio School Safety Center to assist schools, colleges, and law enforcement agencies in preventing and addressing threats of violence. This holistic approach continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of Ohio’s academic communities.

By investing in these security upgrades, Ohio demonstrates its dedication to providing students with the safe learning environments they need to succeed.
