Ohio Department of Transportation seeks public feedback on proposed 2026 projects across multiple counties

Lima, Ohio – The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 1 has announced several proposed projects scheduled for construction in 2026. These projects involve resurfacing, roadway reconstruction, and bridge painting across multiple counties, aimed at enhancing transportation infrastructure and improving traffic conditions. In compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Executive Order 11988, ODOT invites public comments to ensure these projects align with community and environmental priorities.

Proposed County-Specific Projects

Hancock County: State Route 37 Resurfacing (PID: 107677)
ODOT plans to resurface 13.52 miles of pavement along State Route 37, from the intersection at County Road 172 to the Hardin County line. Using the echelon paving method, the project aims to enhance pavement durability and road safety. Construction will temporarily close roads, with detours provided for vehicular traffic while maintaining access for local residents. The project is set for summer 2026.

Paulding County: State Route 111 Shoulder Reconstruction (PID: 117046)
A shoulder reconstruction project is planned for a 5.59-mile stretch of State Route 111, extending from the intersection with U.S. Route 127 to County Road 143. This effort will improve roadway stability and safety. Construction, scheduled for fall 2026, will involve temporary closures and detours, with local access preserved.

Putnam County: State Route 634 Reconstruction (PID: 119865)
State Route 634 will undergo significant reconstruction to elevate its profile between Township Roads J and I-22. The project includes relocating a nearby stream to mitigate erosion risks. While temporary closures are anticipated, access for local traffic will remain intact. Impacts on the Auglaize River floodplain are expected to be minimal, with no significant changes in flood levels. Construction is slated for summer or fall 2026.

Van Wert County: State Route 116/117/697 Resurfacing (PID: 107701)
This resurfacing project covers 6.57 miles of State Route 697 and 3.11 miles of State Routes 116 and 117, spanning from the Mercer County line to Delphos. The full-width echelon paving method will ensure high-quality, long-lasting results. Construction, planned for summer and fall 2026, will include detours for through traffic while maintaining local property access.

Wyandot County: State Route 53 Resurfacing (PID: 113044)
A 9.22-mile section of State Route 53, from the Wyandot/Seneca County line to State Route 67 near Upper Sandusky, will be resurfaced. Temporary closures will redirect traffic, ensuring minimal disruption for local residents. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2026.

District-Wide Bridge Painting Initiative

ODOT also proposes a bridge painting project spanning Allen, Defiance, Hancock, and Wyandot counties (PID: 119050). Key locations include:

  • Allen County: Bridges over Interstate Route 75 near Beaverdam and Bluffton.
  • Defiance County: The State Route 249 bridge over the St. Joseph River.
  • Hancock County: The State Route 103 bridge over Interstate Route 75 near Bluffton.
  • Wyandot County: The State Route 53 bridge over U.S. Route 23 near Upper Sandusky.

Temporary closures of specific roads are anticipated, with detours provided. Construction will occur between spring and fall 2026.

ODOT emphasizes community engagement in the planning process. Public comments on these projects are requested by Friday, December 20, 2024. Feedback on potential impacts to historical or cultural resources, ecological systems, and environmental justice issues is especially encouraged.
