Columbus, Ohio – In a major step toward fighting the drug crisis, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced that nearly three dozen local drug task forces across the state will receive crucial funding to assist in their efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and support community recovery initiatives.
According to the announcement made today, 34 existing drug task forces will share in more than $2.2 million in grants through Governor DeWine’s RecoveryOhio Law Enforcement Fund. These funds will help bolster the task forces’ ability to track down major drug traffickers, break apart large-scale drug organizations, interrupt the movement of money and illegal substances coming from international cartels, and prevent the sale of narcotics within Ohio communities.
“This grant program helps local law enforcement stop drug traffickers and prevent drug dependence using a two-pronged approach,” said Governor DeWine. “Not only do they work to stem the flow of drugs, but they’re also helping citizens with prevention and recovery support.”
Targeting Traffickers While Promoting Prevention and Recovery
The newly awarded grants are designed to enhance the mission of Governor DeWine’s RecoveryOhio initiative, which is centered on not just enforcing drug laws but also ensuring that prevention and recovery efforts are prioritized. The initiative aims to raise awareness about substance use and mental health, provide age-appropriate prevention education in schools, and connect Ohioans struggling with addiction to effective treatment and long-term recovery resources.
Governor DeWine emphasized that tackling the drug crisis requires more than just law enforcement. By combining strict anti-drug operations with public education and support for individuals in recovery, Ohio is continuing to pursue a comprehensive strategy to protect residents from the devastating effects of addiction.
In partnership with the Ohio General Assembly, Governor DeWine secured the funding needed for this grant program as part of the state’s operating budget. The program itself is administered by the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services, which ensures the resources are distributed to the task forces best positioned to make an impact in the fight against drugs.
