Officer terminated from Dayton Police Department after disorderly conduct conviction

Dayton, Ohio – The Dayton Police Department has officially terminated the employment of former Sergeant Joseph Setty, effective immediately. This action follows an extensive investigation and subsequent legal proceedings that led to Setty’s conviction.

The department initially became aware of allegations against Setty and promptly requested an investigation by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). As a result, Setty was placed on administrative leave on March 22, 2023. The investigation culminated in Setty being found guilty on May 8, 2024, in the Montgomery County Common Pleas Court of two counts of disorderly conduct and one count of unlawful restraint. He was sentenced to community control (probation) on May 30, 2024.

Following his conviction, Setty was placed on unpaid leave on June 3, 2024, while an internal administrative investigation was conducted. After the completion of this investigation and the necessary administrative hearings, the department decided to terminate Setty’s employment.

Dayton Police Chief Afzal emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust in the department, stating, “The decision to terminate Joseph Setty’s employment reflects our dedication to maintaining the trust and confidence of our community. We are committed to our core values of professionalism, integrity, fairness, and respect. I will continue to ensure that our officers adhere to the highest ethical standards.”

The Dayton Police Department remains committed to upholding its principles and ensuring that all officers act in accordance with the highest ethical standards expected by the community.
