North Carolina – In a disturbing incident that has shocked a small community in North Carolina, a 35-year-old man, identified as R. Butcher, has been arrested and charged with the brutal murder of his aunt and uncle. According to reports, Butcher executed the elderly couple with close-range shotgun blasts to their heads and subsequently fled with their vehicle.
On the night of November 7, 2024, sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence just following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival at the scene at approximately 10:26 p.m., first responders found a horrific scene: a 72-year-old man, identified as Michael P., and his 70-year-old wife, identified as Carolyn P., lying dead in their driveway, having suffered fatal shotgun wounds to their heads at point-blank range.
The investigation quickly led to Michael and Carolyn’s nephew, Butcher, who was also a close neighbor. Within hours of the murder, law enforcement located Powell’s stolen truck nearby, in a hotel parking lot. Early in the morning on November 8, Butcher was apprehended without incident by officers from the sheriff’s office and police department.
Butcher faces two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of his relatives, alongside one count of felony larceny for stealing the victim’s truck. Initially detained on the vehicle theft, Butcher was later additionally charged with the murders as evidence quickly mounted against him. He is currently held without bond for the murder charges, with a secured bond set at $35,000 for the larceny charge.
While the motive behind the double homicide remains undisclosed, the sheriff’s office confirmed the familial relationship between Butcher and the victims, indicating a tragic betrayal within the family. Sheriff J. Smith expressed his sorrow over the incident, recognizing the Powells as prominent and respected members of their community. “This family was a pillar in the community and very good people. It’s very senseless that they had to die this way,” stated Sheriff Smith.
Senior Pastor T. Judkins where the couple were active members, reflected on the situation with deep sadness. He highlighted Butcher’s known mental health struggles and lamented the lack of earlier intervention, which he believes could have prevented this tragedy. “This young man has been plagued with mental health issues for years,” Judkins explained. “I would have hoped long before, there could have been something done. If so, we wouldn’t be standing here having this conversation now.”
The couple’ contribution to their community was noted by many, with Michael known for his participation in the church choir and both he and his wife being regular churchgoers. The shock of the crime has deeply affected the community, leaving neighbors and friends grieving and searching for answers. As the case progresses, Butcher is scheduled to appear in court on November 19, where he will face the consequences of his actions. Meanwhile, the community continues to mourn the loss of the Powells and grapple with the shocking nature of their deaths.
