Dayton, Ohio – The Montgomery County Homeless Solutions Policy Board (HSPB) has proudly announced the winners of its 2025 Homeless Solutionary Awards, celebrating individuals and groups who have made a significant difference in the fight to end homelessness in the community. This year’s honorees include Kathleen Shanahan, Aryel Newman, Melodie Bennett, and the Social Work Department at the Public Defender’s Office.
A “Homeless Solutionary” is defined as someone who is driven by compassion and justice, and who applies creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking to address homelessness and its deeper, related challenges.
“Addressing homelessness requires all of us—service providers, advocates, policymakers and community leaders—working together to create real, lasting solutions,” said Montgomery County Commissioner Carolyn Rice. “These recipients’ efforts remind us that when we come together with a shared commitment to justice and dignity, we can make a profound impact.”
Honoring Individual Leadership and Collective Efforts
Kathleen Shanahan was recognized for her long-standing leadership as the county’s Housing & Homeless Solutions Program Coordinator. Her efforts helped shape the Homeless Solutions Plan and laid the groundwork for the HSPB. She has helped secure over $176 million in housing and homelessness support through 25 Continuum of Care applications to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
She was nominated by Jennifer Keil, who praised her as a leader with both “heart and expertise.” “She is a fierce advocate, a problem solver and a true source of wisdom,” said Keil. “Our community is stronger because of her dedication and unwavering belief in the power of housing and support.”
Aryel Newman received recognition for her advocacy work through the Youth Action Board (YAB). Drawing from personal experience, Aryel has played a key role in shaping youth-centered solutions and was instrumental in organizing InfoCon, an event that connects homeless youth to resources.
“Her ability to turn lived experience into meaningful advocacy is inspiring,” said her nominator La’Keshia Copeland, the county’s Youth Homelessness Program Coordinator. “Her work has strengthened programs, ensuring they are shaped by the very youth they serve.”
Melodie Bennett, former Executive Director of House of Bread, was honored for her 15 years of service ensuring food security and access to vital resources for the community’s most vulnerable. Her nominator, Lisa Henderson, praised her selfless approach: “Melodie is an incredible fundraiser, nonprofit leader and community connector… it is truly all about the people and families she sees each and every day. I am inspired by her passion and drive to be a part of the change that must happen in our community.”
For the first time, the HSPB presented the Homeless Solutionary Award to a group: the Social Work Department at the Public Defender’s Office. Their tireless efforts to connect justice-involved individuals with stable housing and services earned them this distinction. Their work with Miami Valley Housing Opportunities (MVHO) led to the launch of the Behind the Walls program, supporting people as they reenter society.
Angel Bernard, Rehousing Manager for St. Vincent de Paul and a fellow award recipient, nominated the team. “This team embodies the essence of social work—compassion, advocacy and action,” said Bernard. “Their commitment is a game-changer in the fight against homelessness.”
