Dayton, Ohio – Destination Dayton is set to welcome the Ninth & Tenth (Horse) Cavalry Association, National Buffalo Soldiers for their 158th Reunion, scheduled from July 21 to July 28. This event marks the first time the Association has selected Dayton as its host city, therefore honoring the military tradition of the area.
The Ninth & Tenth (Horse) Cavalry Association represents one of the most storied military units in American history—the Buffalo Soldiers. This educational organization is dedicated to preserving and teaching the remarkable history of the 9th and 10th Cavalry, U.S. Army, which played a crucial role in defending the country from 1866 to 1944.
“We’re honored to welcome this prestigious organization to Dayton for the first time, as they work to preserve the legacy of these brave soldiers,” said Destination Dayton President & CEO Jacquelyn Powell. “Dayton has long been a military town, and each year we host a wide range of military reunions in Montgomery County.”
Emphasizing the close ties between the Dayton region and the Buffalo Soldiers, the theme for the 2024 reunion is “Honoring our Wilberforce Buffalo Soldiers.” Third Black graduate of West Point, Brigadier General Charles Young was stationed in Wilberforce after growing up in Ripley, Ohio. First Black officer in the U.S. Army to command a unit (9th Cavalry B Troop in 1889), Lieutenant John Alexander also taught military science and tactics at Wilberforce University. Wilberforce also features the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center and the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument.
