Dayton, Ohio – The Dayton Police Department has reported an increase in Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) fraud, with skimming devices being a primary method used by criminals. To help residents protect themselves, the department has issued important safety tips for EBT card users.
Tips to Avoid EBT Skimming Fraud
- Inspect Card Readers
Always check card readers for any signs of tampering before using them. If the reader looks suspicious or damaged, avoid using it and notify both the store supervisor and the police. Additionally, never hand over your card to a cashier to complete the transaction for you. - Change PIN Regularly
The department recommends routinely changing your EBT PIN, ideally after every use. At the very least, update the PIN before the next month’s benefits are loaded onto your card. - Use the ConnectEBT App
Download the latest version of the ConnectEBT app, which provides a feature allowing you to lock your card between uses. This can help prevent unauthorized transactions. - Consider Online Food Purchases
When possible, opt for online food purchases to minimize the risk of card skimming at physical card readers.
The Dayton Police Department urges all EBT cardholders to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their benefits. If you suspect any fraudulent activity, contact local law enforcement immediately.
