Dayton City Commissioner Christopher Shaw appointed as vice chair of National League of Cities committee

Dayton, Ohio – City Commissioner Christopher Shaw has been named vice chair of the National League of Cities (NLC) 2024 Transportation and Infrastructure Services Committee. This committee is one of the NLC’s federal advocacy groups dedicated to influencing national policy on critical issues like transportation and infrastructure development. Commissioner Shaw will serve a one-year term, during which he will provide strategic direction and advocate for policies that support cities, towns, and villages across the United States.

Advocating for Local and National Priorities

Commissioner Shaw has been a member of this federal advocacy committee since 2022. His new leadership role was announced by NLC President Sharon Weston Broome, who emphasized Shaw’s commitment to advancing the needs of communities. As vice chair, Shaw will work closely with the committee to shape policy positions and push for federal support on key issues such as transportation infrastructure and funding.

“Being appointed vice chair of the National League of Cities’ Transportation and Infrastructure Services Committee is a great opportunity to advocate for Dayton’s priorities from passenger rail to local investment,” said Commissioner Shaw. “As we enter a period of potential challenges for cities across the country, I’m committed to providing Dayton with a seat at the table and working with other city leaders nationwide to advance local transportation and infrastructure projects.”

National Collaboration for Local Impact

The NLC represents the interests of over 19,000 cities, towns, and villages. Federal advocacy committees like the Transportation and Infrastructure Services Committee serve as a bridge between local governments and decision-makers in Washington, D.C.

“NLC’s federal advocacy committees are vital for uplifting the voices and needs of America’s 19,000 cities, towns, and villages to decision-makers in Washington,” said NLC President Sharon Weston Broome, who is also the mayor-president of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “I am excited to work with Commissioner Shaw and look forward to supporting his vision and leadership as he leads the Transportation Committee and helps grow the partnership between local and federal leaders.”

Leadership Team

Joining Shaw on the committee’s leadership team are Chair Vanessa Fuentes, a councilmember from Austin, Texas, and Riakos Adams, a councilmember at-large from Killeen, Texas. Together, this team will steer the committee’s efforts in advocating for policies that improve transportation and infrastructure systems nationwide.
