Convicted felon receives 78-month prison sentence for selling firearms with auto-conversion devices in Columbus

Columbus, Ohio – Jamie L. Pannell, a 43-year-old Columbus resident, has been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison for illegal firearms-related activities. The sentencing, delivered by U.S. District Court Judge Michael H. Watson, follows Pannell’s involvement in the illegal sale of multiple firearms, including weapons equipped with auto-conversion devices.

Illegal Firearms Sales and Auto-Conversion Devices

Court documents revealed that in April and May 2023, Pannell sold several firearms to an undercover law enforcement agent. Some of these weapons included auto-conversion devices, which transform firearms into fully automatic weapons capable of releasing an entire magazine with a single pull of the trigger. During these transactions, Pannell openly discussed the functionality of these devices, comparing metal and plastic versions and expressing confidence in his ability to provide more in future deals.

In total, Pannell sold eight firearms to the undercover agent during controlled operations. Two of these firearms were equipped with the auto-conversion devices.

As a convicted felon, Pannell was legally prohibited from owning or selling firearms and ammunition. His criminal record includes prior violent offenses against women. Despite these restrictions, he engaged in these illegal activities, leading to federal charges.

In June 2023, Pannell was federally charged, and in April 2024, he pleaded guilty to the illegal possession of firearms and machineguns.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth A. Geraghty.
