Dayton, Ohio – The City of Dayton Department of Water has once again received national recognition for its exemplary stormwater management program. In 2024, Dayton was honored with the National Municipal Stormwater and Green Infrastructure MS4 Award by the Water Environment Federation (WEF). This marks the fourth time in six years that Dayton’s stormwater program has received this prestigious award, with its most recent win in 2022.
The award recognizes effective stormwater management practices, which play a vital role in protecting rivers and streams from pollutants and debris that can run off during storms. The recognition highlights Dayton’s leadership in the field, competing against top programs across the country.
“We’re pleased to share the news that our department has once again won this prestigious award from a pool of national candidates,” said City of Dayton Department of Water Director Michael Powell. “This achievement speaks to the innovative approach our team takes to protect Dayton’s water for the community and the environment.”
Innovative Approach to Stormwater Management
The Water Environment Federation commended Dayton for its ability to deliver outstanding results while keeping costs low. Dayton’s stormwater management efforts include an extensive public outreach campaign, river cleanup events, and initiatives like the Adopt a Storm Drain program. These programs engage the community in preventing illegal discharges and pollution. The city also uses a GIS-based mapping system to monitor the storm sewer system, contributing to its success in keeping local waterways clean.
In a letter to the Dayton Water Department, WEF’s Water Science and Engineering Center Senior Manager Lisa Gleason praised the city’s efforts. “After a thorough evaluation by an expert panel of judges, [Dayton’s] program excelled in effectively managing stormwater, surpassing regulatory requirements, and demonstrating a commitment to innovative solutions,” Gleason wrote.
The MS4 Award honors high-performing communities that exceed regulatory requirements while maintaining technical effectiveness and financial efficiency, as described on WEF’s website. Dayton’s repeated recognition highlights its continued commitment to environmental protection and community well-being.
