Governor DeWine orders flags at half-staff in Cuyahoga County to honor former state lawmaker William ‘Bill’ Patmon

Cleveland, Ohio – Flags across parts of Ohio will be lowered later this month as the state prepares to honor the life and service of a longtime public servant. Governor Mike DeWine has issued an official order recognizing former Ohio House of Representatives member William ‘Bill’ Patmon, marking a moment of remembrance tied to his funeral on April 21, 2026.

The directive applies to several key locations, including all public buildings and grounds throughout Cuyahoga County, as well as major state government sites such as the Ohio Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, and the Rhodes Tower. From sunrise to sunset on the day of the funeral, flags of both the United States and the state of Ohio will be flown at half-staff in tribute.

State honors reflect public service legacy

This ceremonial gesture reflects the impact Patmon had during his time in public office. Lowering flags is a long-standing sign of respect, often reserved for individuals who served their communities or the nation with dedication. By issuing this order, the governor ensures that residents across Cuyahoga County, along with those visiting state buildings, are reminded of Patmon’s contributions.

While the order specifically requires action in Cuyahoga County and at certain state buildings, it also gives flexibility to other parts of Ohio. Public buildings and grounds throughout the rest of the state are permitted to lower their flags at their own discretion during the same time period. This allows communities beyond the county to take part in honoring Patmon if they choose.
