Dayton, Ohio – The Dayton Police Department and city officials are preparing to take part in this year’s National Night Out, an annual event that encourages residents, law enforcement, and local leaders to come together to strengthen neighborhoods and promote public safety.
The 2026 celebration marks the 43rd anniversary of the nationwide program, which began in 1983. Since its launch, National Night Out has grown into one of the largest community-building events in the country, bringing together millions of neighbors across all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canada, and military installations around the world on the first Tuesday of August each year.
What started as a simple effort encouraging residents to leave their porch lights on as a sign of neighborhood unity has evolved into a wide range of community activities, including block parties, cookouts, and local festivals. These gatherings give residents an opportunity to meet police officers and local government representatives in a positive setting while building stronger community relationships.
Neighborhood tour to highlight three community events
As part of this year’s observance, the Dayton Police Department, joined by city leaders, will once again organize its Neighborhood Tour Caravan, visiting several National Night Out celebrations throughout the city.
The first stop is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Fairview Commons, located at 2314 Elsmere Ave.
The caravan will then continue to Gettysburg Grocery by Homefull, 811 S. Gettysburg Ave., where the second visit is planned for 6 p.m.
The evening will conclude at Taste of Old North Dayton, located at 238 Baltimore St., with the final stop beginning at 7 p.m.
National Night Out is designed to increase crime prevention awareness while strengthening the relationships between residents and law enforcement. Organizers believe these local gatherings help create safer neighborhoods by encouraging communication, cooperation, and trust among community members.
The annual event also sends a clear message that Dayton residents are committed to protecting their neighborhoods and working together to prevent crime.
