Dayton, Ohio – The City of Dayton is now accepting nominations for the Steve Whalen Memorial Policing Award, a prestigious honor that recognizes a Dayton Police officer who goes above and beyond in serving the community with commitment, compassion, and integrity. Nominations will be accepted until March 6, 2026, and may be submitted by both members of the public and City of Dayton employees.
Honoring a Legacy of Community-Centered Service
The award is named in memory of Officer Steve Whalen, a beloved member of the Dayton Police Department who was tragically killed in the line of duty in March 1991. Officer Whalen was widely admired for his approachability and deep connection to Dayton residents and community groups. His work consistently reflected the values of community-oriented policing, where relationships and trust were at the heart of his service.
To honor his enduring impact, the Steve Whalen Memorial Policing Award was established in 1993. Since then, it has become a powerful symbol of public appreciation for officers who reflect Whalen’s example through their own work in the field.
Community Participation Encouraged
Every year, the Steve Whalen Memorial Fund Committee carefully reviews the nominations and selects one outstanding officer to receive the award. The honoree will be formally announced and presented with the award at the annual Dayton Police Department Awards Ceremony, scheduled for late April 2026.
The City invites all community members to nominate an officer who has made a significant impact through outstanding service, outreach, or dedication to public safety.
To submit a nomination or learn more, community members are encouraged to visit the City of Dayton’s official website. This award serves not only as a tribute to a fallen hero, but also as a celebration of those who continue to serve with compassion, strength, and selflessness in Dayton today.
