Woman who intentionally poisoned her 4-year-old daughter on multiple occasions and gave medication to a 12-year-old girl that made her feel dizzy while out on bond, was sentenced

Texas – In a harrowing case from Texas, a 32-year-old mother, identified as J. Jones, has been sentenced to spend 60 years in prison after admitting to deliberately poisoning her 4-year-old daughter with dangerous amounts of medications. Judge S. Jumes handed down the sentence, following Jones’ guilty plea to charges of injury to a child with serious bodily or mental injury and abandoning or endangering a child with reckless criminal negligence in January.

According to court documents, Jones repeatedly brought her daughter to the ER at the hospital, claiming the child suffered from chronic seizures. On each visit, the medical staff conducted tests and found alarmingly high levels of anti-allergy medication in the child’s system, which were consistent with Benadryl poisoning. The situation escalated when Jones admitted to giving her daughter several adult Benadryl tablets on multiple occasions, despite knowing the risks associated with such high doses. Children under six are not supposed to take Benadryl, and Jones’s actions placed her daughter at significant risk of seizures, cardiac arrhythmia, breathing difficulties, and even death.

The severity of the situation became apparent in June 2022, when Jones brought her daughter to the hospital yet again, claiming the child was experiencing seizures. The medical staff, already suspicious due to previous visits, closely monitored the child and took frequent urine samples. Each sample consistently tested positive for Benadryl. Jones’s behavior raised red flags among the medical staff, who noticed that the child’s symptoms worsened shortly after visits to the bathroom with her mother. These symptoms included full-body tremors, an elevated heart rate, and the inability to stand, all indicative of Benadryl poisoning. This pattern prompted the doctors to contact the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office, leading to an investigation.

When questioned by detectives, Jones initially denied administering any medication to her daughter. However, she eventually confessed to giving her daughter four or five adult Benadryl tablets on several occasions. A search of her purse revealed empty packets of Benadryl, as well as missing pills from bottles of the antidepressant Trazodone and the antihistamine Hydroxyzine. Jones admitted to giving her daughter one of each pill on two separate occasions.

Jones was first arrested more than two years ago, but authorities said that even while out on bond, she continued her disturbing behavior. Detective M. Weber reported that, as recently as July, Jones was caught giving medication to a 12-year-old girl who was not her daughter. The girl testified that Jones, who falsely claimed to be a nurse, administered drugs that made her feel dizzy. According to Detective Weber, Jones targeted men, becoming their girlfriend in order to gain access to their children.

During the investigation, Jones expressed remorse, admitting that she needed help and referring to herself as a “horrible person.” Despite her admission, the severity of her actions could not be overlooked. Authorities believe that Jones may have victimized all five of her children in a similar manner. Despite her plea for mercy, the judge concluded that a lengthy prison sentence was necessary to prevent further harm. Jones’s estranged husband, Derek Jones, also addressed the court, speaking on behalf of their children. He highlighted the lasting impact of her actions on their lives, emphasizing that their childhoods were marred by hospital visits and a fabricated illness instead of the carefree experiences they deserved.
