Last summer, the doctors were nothing but devastated when a 12-year-old girl, 9-month pregnant, showed in hospital to deliver her baby. She was together with her 24-year-old boyfriend and they were so happy to finally becoming parents.
Their happiness didn’t last long because the doctors immediately called the police as soon as the couple arrived at the hospital. The father-to-be was nothing but surprised when he was informed that it was against the law to be in a relationship with minor girl even though her parents knew about the relationship and even set up a gender reveal party months before.
According to Law and Crime that reported about this case few days ago, the then 24-year-old Juan Miranda-Jara was arrested and charged with first-degree rape of a minor under 14. Since his initial arrest, he entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Jara will receive credit for time served, but will have to serve at least 85% of the sentence before he is eligible for a parole.
Jara was arrested when they arrived to a local hospital in Oklahoma and he was jailed since his initial arrest. The doctors reported the case to the police once Jara confirmed that he was the biological father of the child while his minor girlfriend was delivering the baby. As per Jara’s claims, he was together with the 12-year-old since October 2020.
“They walked in just like any other couple would, excited to deliver their newborn child,” said one police officer who was dispatched at the hospital. “We don’t get this kind of call every day,” officer Bean said. “It certainly was a surprise for everyone involved. It’s kind of bizarre. It’s a different way of doing it, instead of a parent reporting it, the actual suspect brought the child in and then admitted it was his,” he added.
The incident gained a lot of media attention and people started asking where the girl’s parents were during the girl’s relationship with Jara. Weeks later, the local police department announced they arrested the girl’s mother adding she and the other family members knew about the relationship between the two and they had nothing against.
“The investigation revealed that the victim’s mother and family members were aware of the relationship between the victim and Miranda-Jara,” reads the arrest report. “The family permitted the relationship, and there are photos of the family throwing a baby shower for the victim and the suspect.”
The mother, who was already charged with manufacturing and distributing methamphetamine and has an ongoing trial case, was charged with child neglect and enabling child sex abuse. She decided not to accept guilty plea deal and is awaiting trial.
In addition to the charges, the mother lost custody over her now 13-year-old daughter, while the father is serving prison sentence after being convicted of rape.
