Columbus, Ohio – Ohio is opening another round of funding aimed at strengthening safety across communities, with state leaders emphasizing the need for protection in places where people gather, learn, and worship.
Governor Mike DeWine announced that the Ohio Emergency Management Agency started accepting applications for the next round of Ohio Security Grants. The application window will remain open until May 15, 2026, giving eligible organizations time to apply for a share of the available funding.
This round includes a total of $6 million, which will be distributed to support safety upgrades for houses of worship, chartered non-public schools, licensed pre-schools, and nonprofit organizations. The program will be managed by Ohio EMA with support from Ohio Homeland Security, both operating under the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
Funding aimed at safety and preparedness
The goal of the grant program is to help organizations improve their ability to prevent and respond to potential threats. Funds can be used for a wide range of security improvements, including hiring or retaining resource officers, special duty police officers, or licensed armed security guards. Organizations may also invest in equipment designed to improve physical security, such as surveillance systems, inspection tools, and communication systems for emergencies.
The program also supports planning and preparedness efforts, helping organizations respond more effectively in times of crisis. These measures are intended to reduce risk and create safer environments for the public.
Since the program was first created in 2019 by Governor DeWine, it has already distributed more than $42 million in funding across the state. That long-term investment shows a continued focus on protecting communities and supporting organizations that serve the public.
“No matter where Ohioans worship, go to school, or spend their free time, they must feel safe and secure,” said Governor DeWine. “This grant program helps to ensure those places are offering the best protection for our citizens.”
The funding is part of the state’s operating budget and reflects an ongoing effort to address safety concerns in a proactive way. By providing financial support for security upgrades, the state aims to help organizations stay prepared and reduce the impact of potential threats.
Organizations interested in applying are encouraged to review eligibility details and submit their applications before the May 15 deadline.
