“I got shot by a gun”: 4-year-old boy hospitalized after he got his hands on a gun his parents kept unsecured in their home and accidentally shot himself; parents charged

Alabama – In a shocking incident in Alabama that underscores the critical importance of gun safety, a 39-year-old mother, identified as C. Lutz, and a 27-year-old father, identified as A. Corrie, are facing serious legal repercussions after their 4-year-old son shot himself with a gun they kept unsecured in the home. The traumatic event not only revealed the dangers of irresponsible firearm storage but also exposed the alarming conditions under which the child was living, including the presence of illegal wildlife.

The case came to light on April 4, when deputies responded to the hospital after the child was admitted with gunshot wounds to his right knee and right arm. The parents claimed they were at home when the gunshot rang out and immediately ran to find their child bleeding. They applied pressure to his injuries and drove him to the hospital themselves. He was later airlifted to children’s hospital for advanced care. The young boy, in a moment of innocent candor, told deputies, “I got shot by a gun,” prompting an immediate investigation by local authorities.

After the incident, sheriff’s deputies secured a warrant to search the home. Upon searching the family’s residence, law enforcement discovered not only multiple unsecured firearms but also roughly 30 snakes, some dead, and a juvenile crocodile living in unsanitary conditions. The discovery led to further scrutiny of the living conditions and the parental responsibilities of the boy’s parents. In an alarming revelation, it was found that the couple had left the firearm unsecured within reach of their young child, which directly led to the shooting. The incident was compounded by the deplorable condition in which the animals were kept. According to the sheriff’s office, some of the living snakes were housed in the same enclosures as the deceased, leading to charges of failing to properly bury livestock.

Both parents are now facing serious charges, reflecting the severity of the incident. They were arrested and charged with first-degree assault, highlighting the grave risk of death their actions—or lack thereof—posed to their child. The charges extend beyond negligence with firearms; they also include animal cruelty and possession of a prohibited animal, underscoring the broader context of neglect and irresponsibility. Additionally, the parents face charges of chemical endangerment of two children due to the presence of marijuana and drug paraphernalia found within the home. This aspect of the case paints a disturbing picture of the environment in which multiple children were living.

The Department of Human Resources took immediate action by removing other children from the home, prioritizing their safety in light of the parents’ arrest. The community and local authorities have expressed deep concern over the incident. District Attorney P. Casey emphasized the necessity of gun safety, especially in homes with children. “Parents must ensure guns are properly stored in the home out of the reach of small children,” she stated, highlighting a preventable tragedy that has now resulted in significant legal and social consequences for the family involved.

As the legal proceedings continue, the community is left to reflect on the critical importance of responsible parenting and the dire consequences of negligence. The child, fortunately, is expected to recover, but the scars of the event extend beyond the physical injuries he sustained. This case serves as a somber reminder of the responsibilities that come with gun ownership and the profound impact parental actions can have on the lives of their children. The hope is that this tragic event will encourage more stringent adherence to gun safety practices and better awareness of the legal and moral obligations of parenting.
