Columbus, Ohio – Governor Mike DeWine is calling on families across Ohio to take full advantage of the upcoming 2025 Sales Tax Holiday, which is set to run for a longer duration and cover more items than ever before. From 12:00 a.m. on Friday, August 1, through 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, Ohioans will be able to make a wide range of purchases without paying state sales tax.
This year’s two-week tax holiday marks the second consecutive year of expanded savings, following a significant change in 2024 when the Ohio General Assembly and Governor DeWine extended the usual three-day event to ten days and broadened the list of eligible items. That expansion allowed shoppers to buy goods priced up to $500 without being taxed, extending the benefits beyond school supplies to include many basic household needs.
More Time and More Savings for Ohio Families
“The timing of this year’s sales tax holiday not only supports families preparing for back-to-school, but also provides relief on other important household needs,” said Governor DeWine.
Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives Matt Huffman echoed that sentiment, stating, “Ohio’s sales tax holiday is a practical way we can help working families keep more of their hard-earned dollars. Whether it’s back-to-school shopping or everyday essentials, this is an opportunity for Ohioans to get more value for their money.”
Senate President Rob McColley added, “The hardworking taxpayers deserve this well-earned break. It is the people’s money first, and they know how best to spend it. I strongly support any opportunity to boost the ability of Ohioans to provide for their families.”
What’s Included and What’s Not
The 2025 Sales Tax Holiday allows for both in-store and online purchases, giving residents even more flexibility when planning their shopping. However, not everything is exempt from sales tax. The exemption does not apply to:
-
Services
-
Motor vehicles
-
Watercraft or outboard motors
-
Alcohol, tobacco, and vapor products
For a full list of qualifying items, exemptions, and detailed guidance, shoppers are encouraged to visit the Ohio Department of Taxation’s Sales Tax Holiday page. Questions can also be directed to the Department via email or by calling 1-888-405-4039.
With more time to shop and an expanded range of eligible items, the 2025 Sales Tax Holiday is poised to provide significant financial relief to households across the state. Ohio families are encouraged to mark their calendars and take full advantage of the opportunity to stretch their dollars further this August.
