Dayton Police Department hosts hiring event on Wednesday to address staff shortages, base pay nearly $78k

Dayton, Ohio – With a hiring event this Wednesday, the Dayton Police Department is intensifying its attempts to attract new officers in order to meet persistent challenges in staffing its ranks. Sessions for the event will be set for 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Montgomery County Job Center at 1111 S. Edwin C. Moses Blvd.

The department has struggled with a shortfall of personnel for several years, made worse by general negative attitude toward law enforcement and pay issues. In response, the Dayton Police Department is actively seeking for those interested in a career in law enforcement, pushing possible candidates to personally explore prospects with recruiters during the event.

Beginning in 2024, the agency offers officers a competitive starting pay of $71,557.45; with a planned raise of $77,411.27 by 2026. Health and life insurance, a four-day work schedule, and twelve paid holidays annually are additional perks. Twelve paid vacation days and 15 paid sick days yearly are some of the additional perks expected to attract prospective officers.

Applicants must be at least 20 years old at the time of application and 21 by the time they complete the Dayton Police Academy. Candidates also must have an active driver’s license and either a GED or a high school diploma.
