Dayton authorities investigate multiple shootings believed to be connected to social media organized gatherings

Dayton, Ohio – The Dayton Police Department is asking residents to help prevent violence connected to large unauthorized gatherings known as “pop-up parties” after several recent shootings and disturbances appeared to be linked to such events.

According to police, detectives with the department’s Violent Offender Unit are actively investigating multiple shootings that occurred in different parts of the city, including incidents on Old Orchard Avenue, Grafton Avenue, and Viola Drive.

Authorities believe the cases may be connected and are examining whether the violence stemmed from gatherings that were organized and promoted through social media.

Police said these events can be especially difficult to manage because they are often arranged with little warning and may draw large crowds before law enforcement becomes aware of them.

Recent gathering led to fight and gunfire

Investigators said the most recent incident involved a gathering of more than 50 juveniles near the 1100 block of Grafton Avenue.

According to police, the event escalated into a large fight. Authorities reported that dozens of gunshots were fired during the disturbance, creating a dangerous situation for those attending as well as nearby residents.

Detectives are also looking into whether the shooting was connected to two separate fights that reportedly occurred earlier the same day but were never reported to law enforcement.

During the weekend, investigators conducted multiple follow-up inquiries related to the violence. Police said several homes and vehicles were struck by gunfire during incidents connected to the ongoing investigation.

Authorities believe at least some of the shootings may be associated with a pop-up party that had been advertised on social media platforms.

The department noted that while these gatherings may begin as social events, they can quickly become dangerous when large crowds gather without planning, supervision, or proper security measures.

Police seek help from the public

Dayton Police Chief Eric Henderson warned that the city has seen similar situations before.

“We have seen in the past, including in June 2024, that large pop- up gatherings can escalate quickly and lead to violence and the loss of life. If you see suspicious activity or have information about a planned gathering that may pose a safety risk, please report it to law enforcement.”

Officials said community cooperation is an important part of preventing future violence. They are encouraging residents to share information about planned gatherings, suspicious activity, or any details that could help investigators identify those responsible for recent shootings.

The department emphasized that reports from community members can help officers respond more quickly and potentially stop dangerous situations before they escalate.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Dayton Police Department by calling (937) 333-COPS (2677). Residents should call 911 immediately if they witness an emergency or an active threat to public safety.

As the investigations continue, police are urging parents, community leaders, and residents to remain alert and work together to reduce violence associated with unauthorized gatherings that have recently caused concern in several Dayton neighborhoods.
