Young boy dead, three injured in Toledo Christmas Eve fire

Toledo, Ohio – An 11-year-old child died in a tragic holiday accident. The call came in at 4:32 a.m. on Christmas Eve, according to the Toledo Fire Department. A caller reported a fire at a residence on Fernwood Avenue in Central Toledo, where two parents and four children were inside.

Firefighters were sent right away and arrived at the location in less than five minutes. The first team on the scene discovered flames coming from the two-story home’s windows on both floors.

Five members of the family were able to flee, but a young boy was still trapped inside, according to a fireman.

Crews rushed into the house, which was already engulfed in flames, trying their best to save the boy. But the heavy smoke and fire made the search difficult.

Crews discovered the unresponsive body of the 11-year-old boy in a second-floor bedroom just after 5 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three members of the family were sent to Toledo Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to firefighters.

The fire had been put out by 5:15 a.m.

There is an open investigation into the cause of the fire.
