ODOT closes State Route 646 bridge indefinitely over Salem Creek following routine safety inspection

New Philadelphia, Ohio – In a decision made out of an abundance of caution, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has closed the State Route 646 bridge over Salem Creek, located just west of the village of Annapolis. The closure follows a recent inspection that raised safety concerns about the structure.

The bridge, originally built in 1928, is one of only two bridges in ODOT District 11 that still uses timber beams in its construction. Though it underwent major reconstruction in 1990, age and structural composition have now prompted officials to shut it down entirely. According to ODOT, the bridge typically carries about 400 vehicles each day, with approximately 10% of that traffic made up of trucks.

To accommodate drivers affected by the closure, a detailed detour has been set up. From west to east, motorists should:

  • Travel south on SR 9 in Harrison County to SR 151

  • Head east on SR 151 to US 22

  • Continue east on US 22 to SR 152

  • Finally, go north on SR 152 to reconnect with SR 646

The duration of the closure has not been determined. ODOT officials are currently evaluating the bridge’s condition to decide the next steps, which could include further repairs, a complete rebuild, or even replacement.

Motorists are being reminded that “road-closed” signs and barricades are in place for public protection. “This closure is in place for your safety,” ODOT emphasized, warning that moving or ignoring the barriers could pose serious risks.

As the investigation into the bridge’s stability continues, updates will be shared with the public. For now, drivers are urged to follow posted detours and allow extra time for travel.
