New Athens High School construction begins as part of long term facilities improvement plan

Athens, Ohio – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine joined Athens City leaders, educators, students, and community members to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the new Athens High School, a project valued at $69 million. The major investment is being made possible through a partnership between the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) and local funding approved by Athens voters.

“I want to congratulate Athens on this exciting day breaking ground on their new high school,” said Governor DeWine. “School buildings are important, but the real heart of our schools are our teachers and students. Today I salute the teachers who are making a brighter future for our young Ohioans.”

Athens City School District Superintendent Chad Springer also highlighted the community’s role in bringing the project to life. “This groundbreaking represents a shared vision brought to life by our community’s unwavering commitment,” Springer said. “This new high school will be a hub for learning, opportunity, and growth, breaking down barriers to ensure every student has access to the tools they need to succeed.”

State and Local Investment in Education

The new high school will stand three stories tall, covering 153,140 square feet, and will include advanced security features such as secure entry vestibules and modern surveillance systems to provide a safe environment for students and staff.

Funding for the project is a combined effort: the OFCC has contributed $27.7 million in state funds, while $42 million in local contributions — including revenue from a voter-approved property tax levy passed in November 2023 — make up the remainder.

The school’s construction marks the final stage in the Athens City School District’s comprehensive facilities plan. Previous phases included the construction of two new elementary schools, the renovation of an existing elementary and middle school, and the demolition of three outdated elementary schools.

Looking Ahead to 2027

The Athens High School project represents a commitment not only to modern facilities but also to the long-term growth and success of students. When completed, the school will serve as both an academic and community hub, reflecting the values of innovation and opportunity.

Set to open its doors for the 2027–2028 school year, the new Athens High School will stand as a lasting symbol of what can be achieved when state support and local commitment come together for the benefit of future generations.
