National retailer gives $100K to Dayton nonprofit

Dayton, Ohio – The charitable arm of a national retailer has delivered a sizable gift to a local nonprofit. The Boys and Girls Club of Dayton is the recipient of the gift. The group announced a record gift of $100,000 from Kohl’s Cares, part of Kohl’s retail chain.

The Boys and Girls Club of Dayton provides a safe space for high-quality youth development programming, education support, health education, mentoring and recreation, delivered by a staff focused on inspiring, developing and helping young people to reach their full potential. During the pandemic, the club also has served as a community anchor for families in the west Dayton area.

“We began our partnership with Kohl’s over a year ago and we have been fortunate to have their associates volunteer for the club and now this amazing gift will enable us to continue building great futures,” said Shanda McKinney, board chair of the local nonprofit. “Our staff will now have the necessary supplies and materials to continue to touch more kids in west Dayton with our evidenced-based programming and meet their needs, as our kids and their families continue to try to navigate during the pandemic.”

Kohl’s grant to Boys and Girls Club of Dayton was made through Kohl’s A Community with Heart Program. The program will donate $5 million in grants to selected nonprofit organizations across the country.

“We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the support of the Kohl’s associates and all their customers who purchased items in the store to make this incredible gift possible,” said Tara Marlow, CEO of The Boys and Girls Club of Dayton. “This grant, and more importantly the partnership with the entire Kohl’s team, will allow our staff to continue to relentlessly pursue our mission to inspire and enable all young people – especially those who need us most – to reach their full potential as caring, productive, responsible citizens.”

Kohl’s store teams and leaders across the country identified and nominated nonprofit recipients from 49 states that are near and dear to their hearts.

The donations are made possible through Kohl’s philanthropic merchandise program, Kohl’s Cares, which sells children’s books and toys and donates 100 percent of the net profit to charitable organizations across the country that improve the health and wellness of families.

Kohl’s Corp., headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, has more than 1,150 locations in 49 states, including nine in the Dayton region.
