Man lured his ex-girlfriend he shared a child with to the woods after finding out she was pregnant again only to fatally shoot her in the stomach; sentenced

Wisconsin – In a harrowing case in Wisconsin, a 23-year-old man, identified as L. Barclay, was sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 50 years for the murder of his 22-year-old girlfriend, identified as K. Hansen, with whom he shared a young son together. The chilling details of the case, including the motive and the brutal act, emerged during the trial, painting a stark picture of domestic violence and premeditated murder.

On the evening of April 16, 2024, Barclay lured Hansen for a walk along a local biking trail after finding out about her pregnancy. According to the criminal complaint, an argument erupted between the two over Hansen’s pregnancy, which escalated to a tragic conclusion. Barclay, overwhelmed by anger during their discussion, fatally shot Hansen in the stomach, leaving her to die alone on the trail. This violent act marked the end of Hansen’s life in a place ironically named Peace Trail, a location that will forever hold a different meaning for her grieving family. Hansen’s body was discovered the following morning, showing signs that she had struggled for her life. Autopsy reports confirmed the cause of death as a gunshot wound from a .22-caliber pistol, with the weapon and ammunition later found at Barclay’s residence.

The prosecution, led by J. Sanders, depicted a premeditated murder, detailing Barclay’s calculated actions before and after the crime. Sanders highlighted the threatening messages Barclay previously sent to Hansen, his meticulous planning to create an alibi, and his cold demeanor following the murder. He pointed to Barclay’s manipulative behavior, likening his actions to those of a calculated player of a grim game, masterminding the events leading to Hansen’s death. This calculated behavior extended to crafting an alibi by attempting to arrange a night out with friends, a plan that he communicated via text messages even as Hansen lay dying.

During the sentencing, emotional testimonies from Hansen’s family painted a vivid picture of the loss and pain they endured. The victim’s mother, in a heart-wrenching address in court, detailed the permanent absence her daughter leaves behind, especially for her young son, who will now only connect with his mother through photographs and stories. She expressed profound grief and anger towards Barclay, stating, “My last memory of her is seeing the back of her head as she ran out the door, not knowing she was meeting her killer. You gave us a life sentence, a life without our daughter and sister. Therefore, you should have to forfeit yours.”

Prosecutor Sanders argued forcefully for a severe punishment, citing the premeditation and cruelty of Barclay’s actions. He detailed how Barclay lured Hansen under the guise of a peaceful walk only to execute a heinous plan of murder. Sanders said, “Fate didn’t get [Hansen] pregnant. Fate didn’t lure her to the woods and bring a gun. Fate didn’t shoot her in the stomach and leave her there to be found by joggers or eaten by animals, or whichever came first. Fate didn’t cruelly walk away, stashing the evidence, hiding her phone, and fate didn’t lie about how he ‘hopes she’s out with friends.’

In defense, attorney M. Frost highlighted Barclay’s troubled past and emotional immaturity, suggesting these as factors that contributed to the tragic event. However, she acknowledged the severity of the crime and concurred that Barclay’s actions warranted a substantial period of incarceration.

Judge J. Kuglitsch, addressing the court, underscored the calculated nature of Barclay’s actions and the need for a substantial sentence to reflect the gravity of the crime. He ultimately sentenced Barclay to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 50 years. As the case concluded, the community and the families affected are left to grapple with the aftermath of a tragedy that highlights the devastating impacts of domestic violence and the irreversible consequences of a moment’s anger. The sentence, while providing a closure of a legal chapter, leaves a lifelong void in the lives of Hansen’s loved ones.
