Investigation launched after fatal officer-involved shooting in Dayton during late-night encounter

Dayton, Ohio – A late-night encounter between a Dayton police officer and a man on a bicycle ended in a fatal officer-involved shooting, according to information released by the Dayton Police Department.

The incident occurred on March 24, 2026, at approximately 9:28 p.m., beginning as what appeared to be a routine stop. An officer approached an individual riding a bicycle near the intersection of Second Street and St. Clair Street. After a brief initial conversation, the situation quickly changed when the individual suddenly ran from the officer.

Foot chase turns into deadly confrontation

Police said the officer pursued the suspect and caught up with him a short distance away near Third Street and St. Clair Street. What followed was a tense and dangerous struggle that escalated within moments.

According to officials, the male suspect pulled out a handgun during the encounter. A struggle broke out between the suspect and the officer over control of the weapon. During that struggle, the officer discharged their firearm, striking the individual.

Officers on the scene immediately shifted their focus from the confrontation to providing medical assistance. Aid was quickly rendered to the suspect in an effort to save his life.

Emergency medical personnel transported the injured man to a nearby hospital. Despite those efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Investigation underway

Authorities confirmed that no officers were injured during the incident. However, the seriousness of the event has triggered multiple layers of investigation.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will lead the criminal investigation into the shooting. Once that process is complete, the findings will be presented to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Following the criminal investigation, the Dayton Police Department will conduct its own internal review. This administrative investigation will be handled by the department’s Professional Standards Bureau to evaluate the actions taken during the incident.

The case remains under investigation, and officials have indicated that more information may be released as the process continues.
