Dayton to host delegation from Bosnia and Herzegovina for a three-week Youth Leadership Program

Dayton, Ohio – The City of Dayton is preparing to welcome a special group of international guests as part of its continued efforts to foster global understanding and youth empowerment. Beginning October 29, a delegation of 18 students and three teachers from Bosnia and Herzegovina will arrive in Dayton for a three-week Youth Leadership Program, which this year holds added meaning as it aligns with the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords.

“This year’s cohort represents the cities of Livno and Zenica,” and during their time in Dayton, participants will be involved in a variety of commemorative events and leadership-building activities aimed at deepening their appreciation for peacebuilding and international cooperation. This visit offers a unique cultural and educational opportunity not just for the visiting group, but also for the local community.

The Youth Leadership Program provides a highly immersive experience, introducing youth and educators from Bosnia and Herzegovina to concepts such as democratic governance, civic engagement, dialogue, volunteerism, and community-building. Participants will live with local host families, gaining firsthand insight into American culture and everyday life.

Past participants have called the experience “life-changing” and “an opportunity for friendship otherwise not known,” reflecting the emotional and transformative power of this international exchange.

The 2025 program is supported by a $120,000 Cooperative Agreement between the City of Dayton and the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo, funded by the U.S. Department of State. The City of Dayton became the official U.S. partner for this initiative in 2019, and has since successfully competed for continued grant support.

The Dayton Mediation Center, a division of the City’s Department of Planning, Neighborhoods & Development, coordinates the visit. With its long-standing expertise in conflict resolution and community dialogue, the Center is uniquely positioned to lead the program—especially in light of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s post-conflict recovery and reconciliation efforts.

Additional support comes from the Entrepreneurs’ Center and the Dayton Sister City Committee, who are helping to deliver professional development workshops and enriching cultural exchange opportunities.
