Dayton, Ohio – Nominations are now open for the prestigious Steve Whalen Memorial Policing Award, an honor that recognizes a Dayton Police officer who exhibits outstanding commitment and service to the community. This award is a tribute to Officer Steve Whalen, a dedicated public servant who was tragically killed in the line of duty in March 1991 while attempting to stop a shooting suspect.
Officer Whalen was widely known for his dedication to community-oriented policing, going above and beyond his regular duties to build meaningful connections with residents. Established in 1993, the Steve Whalen Memorial Policing Award continues his legacy by honoring officers who exemplify the same level of commitment to community engagement and public service.
Community members are encouraged to participate in this important process by nominating a deserving officer through the Dayton Police website. Nominations must be submitted by February 21, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.
The recipient of this distinguished award will be announced and celebrated at the annual Dayton Police Awards Ceremony in April. This event serves as an opportunity to honor the bravery, dedication, and outstanding efforts of Dayton’s finest in keeping the community safe.
