Dayton Police Department issues scam alert about fake law enforcement calls requesting payment

Dayton, Ohio – The Dayton Police Department is reminding residents to remain alert after officials reported seeing a rise in scam attempts involving people posing as law enforcement officers. Authorities say scammers are contacting individuals through phone calls or text messages, trying to pressure them into sending money by falsely claiming they have outstanding legal issues.

Police say these messages often tell victims they must pay money immediately for unpaid tickets or warrants or face arrest. The scammers typically attempt to create a sense of urgency so the person receiving the message feels pressured to respond quickly without verifying the information.

According to the Dayton Police Department, these calls and messages are not legitimate. Officers emphasized that people should be cautious if they receive any communication claiming to be from law enforcement demanding money.

Officials issued a clear warning to the public about how real law enforcement operates: Law enforcement will not call/text you demanding payment to avoid jail.”

Police advise residents to ignore suspicious messages and avoid sending money or personal information to anyone making such claims. If a person receives a suspicious call or text that appears to come from someone pretending to be a police officer, authorities recommend hanging up immediately and reporting the incident to local law enforcement.
