Dayton, Ohio – The Dayton Police Department’s Traffic Services Unit is currently investigating a hit and run incident that occurred on the evening of July 22, 2024. An 8-year-old girl, who was riding her bike with her family, was struck and dragged for half a mile by a vehicle, resulting in serious injuries.
Tragic Incident on Wayne Avenue
The incident took place after 9:20 p.m. when a family, including the young girl on her bicycle, was crossing Wayne Avenue at Clover Street. A 55-year-old male suspect in a vehicle hit the girl and continued to drag her up to the intersection of Keowee Street and Fifth Street. The young victim sustained serious injuries from the ordeal but is expected to make a recovery. Fortunately, other family members involved in the incident only suffered minor injuries.
Thanks to the prompt action of witnesses at the scene, the suspect was apprehended by law enforcement. He is now facing several felony charges including aggravated vehicular assault, hit and run, and operating a vehicle under the influence (OVI).
Ongoing Investigation and Road Closures
In the wake of the incident, affected roads were closed for approximately three and a half hours to facilitate emergency response and initial investigations. The Dayton Police’s Traffic Services Unit is diligently working to gather more video evidence to support the prosecution of the suspect involved.
