City of Dayton announces full lane closures on Riverside Drive while crews address sinkhole damage

Dayton, Ohio – The City of Dayton has confirmed that a sinkhole has developed in a southbound lane of Riverside Drive near Ryburn Avenue, measuring approximately 6 feet by 6 feet. This unexpected sinkhole has led to the closure of one southbound lane, but officials report that more closures are coming.

In order to ensure there are no hidden voids beneath the pavement, city crews will remove additional sections around the affected area. For the safety of workers and the public, both southbound lanes of Riverside Drive will be fully closed to allow for thorough inspection and repairs.

Closure Timeline and Detour

According to city officials, the southbound section of Riverside Drive at Siebenthaler Avenue will close on Monday, July 21, after the morning rush hour (around 9 a.m.). If no unforeseen complications arise, the closure is expected to last until Wednesday, July 23, before 7 a.m. Additionally, Ryburn Avenue at Riverside Drive will also be closed during this time.

Motorists traveling southbound are urged to follow the official detour route: East Siebenthaler Avenue to North Main Street to East Hillcrest Avenue to Riverside Drive. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and expect delays in the area as crews work to fix the damage and ensure the road is safe.

City Requests Patience During Repairs

“The City appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation during this repair effort,” officials stated. They also noted that the repair timeline is subject to change if crews encounter additional issues during the inspection or repair process.

Residents and commuters are encouraged to stay updated by checking local alerts and to exercise caution when traveling near the work zone.
