Ohio – Fresh allegations against Ohio Congressman Max Miller have pushed the Trump-endorsed Republican back into an uncomfortable spotlight, reviving past accusations from former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham while an increasingly bitter custody fight with his ex-wife spills into public view.
The controversy surrounding Miller has rapidly grown beyond a private divorce dispute. Court filings, public statements, police involvement, and accusations exchanged between powerful Republican-connected families have turned the situation into a politically explosive battle unfolding in Ohio at a sensitive moment for Republicans heading toward another difficult election cycle.
At the center of the conflict is Miller’s ongoing custody fight with his former wife, Emily Moreno, the daughter of Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno. Although the couple divorced last year, the legal battle over their 2-year-old daughter has become increasingly hostile, with both sides accusing the other of damaging behavior.
According to court filings first reported by the Daily Mail, Emily Moreno accused Miller of physical abuse during multiple incidents. One allegation claims Miller struck her during a custody exchange in February, leaving bruises on her arm and torso. Another accusation says Miller threw a pot of boiling water at her in 2024 while their young daughter was nearby.
Photos published by the outlet reportedly showed bruising Emily said resulted from the custody exchange incident. In additional court filings connected to the divorce proceedings, she also accused Miller of speaking to her in an “inappropriate, aggressive and demeaning manner” and engaging in behavior she argued was unsafe around their child.
Miller has fiercely denied all allegations.
On May 8, he publicly dismissed the Daily Mail story as “nothing but lies” and attempted to defend himself by releasing videos, emails, screenshots, and text conversations that he said contradicted the accusations being made against him.
At the same time, Miller escalated the fight by directly accusing his ex-father-in-law, Senator Bernie Moreno, of helping finance what he called “a malicious campaign to ruin my life.”
The public nature of the dispute has shocked many Ohio political observers because both Miller and Moreno are Republicans closely tied to Donald Trump. Both men have received Trump’s backing, and both remain influential figures inside Ohio GOP politics.
Miller also used social media to attack his ex-wife’s credibility, claiming she suffers from “mental health issues.” Court records cited by News 5 Cleveland show Miller is now asking a judge to order psychological evaluations as part of the custody dispute. In those filings, he described Emily’s conduct since the divorce as “increasingly confrontational, irrational, and somewhat bizarre.”
Old Allegations Return to the Surface
The newest accusations have also revived attention around Miller’s past relationship with former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham.
Back in 2020, Grisham alleged Miller physically abused her while the two worked in Donald Trump’s White House during his first term. She claimed Miller pushed her against a wall and slapped her during their relationship.
Miller denied those claims at the time and later filed a lawsuit against Grisham in 2021. However, he eventually dropped the lawsuit in 2023.
Now, critics say the similarities between the earlier accusations and the new claims involving Emily Moreno are impossible to ignore. Supporters of Miller, however, argue the allegations are politically motivated and tied to an ugly divorce battle rather than criminal wrongdoing.
The situation became even more serious after Bay Village police confirmed they responded to a child abuse complaint connected to the family. News 5 Cleveland and The Daily Beast both reported that the investigation remains open.
No criminal charges against Miller have been announced.
Still, the combination of abuse allegations, a continuing police investigation, and a highly emotional custody war has dramatically increased scrutiny around the congressman at a politically dangerous time.
Despite the controversy, Trump has continued publicly backing Miller.
Just days before the allegations exploded across headlines, Trump praised the Ohio congressman on Truth Social, writing, “Congressman Max Miller is a fantastic Champion for the Great People of Ohio’s 7th Congressional District!” Trump added, “Max Miller has my Complete and Total Endorsement — HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!”
That endorsement now hangs over the controversy as Republicans attempt to avoid new distractions during a tense election cycle.
The battle has also exposed unusual fractures inside Trump-aligned Republican circles in Ohio. Senator Bernie Moreno, elected in 2024 with Trump’s support, now finds his own family pulled into one of the state’s ugliest political and personal scandals.
Meanwhile, Miller insists he is the target of false attacks designed to destroy both his reputation and relationship with his daughter.
“The moral of the story is this. My ex-wife needs help. She is more focused on hurting me than loving our child,” Miller wrote publicly. “To anyone out there going through a divorce. I see you. I understand what you are going through. You are not alone in dealing with things like this.”
For now, the custody case continues behind courtroom doors, but politically, the damage is already spreading far beyond the family dispute itself.
