Fairview Park resident celebrates $200,000 Cash Explosion win after second appearance on the show

Fairview Park, Ohio – A Fairview Park resident is celebrating a life-changing moment after returning to the Ohio Lottery’s popular Cash Explosion television game and walking away with a major prize. Mike Morrell won a total of $200,000 during his second appearance on the show, a victory that came at a particularly meaningful time as he had just retired.

Morrell’s journey to the big win began thanks to an unusual strategy from his wife. After years of trying to appear on the show herself, she began entering lottery tickets under his name instead. The plan ended up working far better than expected.

Second Appearance Brings Big Rewards

Morrell first appeared on Cash Explosion in August 2024. While he enjoyed the experience, that appearance did not result in the big jackpot he had hoped for. However, his luck changed more than a year later when he discovered that he had been selected to return to the show.

On December 20, 2025, Morrell learned that he had been chosen again to compete on Cash Explosion. The news arrived just days before the holidays, making the season especially exciting for him and his family.

During the competition, Morrell quickly began building his winnings. On the first day of play, he hit a triple and earned $11,900. The amount was then doubled to $23,800. Even though that round ended with him finishing in second place, the competition was far from over.

As the game progressed, Morrell advanced to the final round where the biggest prizes were on the line. In that round, his name was selected three separate times, giving him multiple opportunities to increase his winnings.

Each time his name was drawn, Morrell decided to trade up his prize amounts. His strategy paid off when he ultimately secured the game’s $50,000 jackpot. By making two additional appearances after reaching the final round, Morrell increased his total winnings to $200,000.

After required state and federal taxes were deducted, he is expected to take home approximately $146,500.

A Winning Strategy for the Family

Morrell credited his wife for the idea that helped him reach the show in the first place. When asked whether she felt disappointed that he appeared twice while she had been trying to get selected for 25 years, Morrell said, “No, we make a great winning team.”

He also joked that if he is ever selected for the show a third time, he plans to let his wife take his place so she can enjoy the experience herself.

The timing of the win made the moment even more meaningful. Morrell said he had just retired after the third appearance aired, making the prize a perfect start to the next chapter of his life.

The couple already has plans for how they will celebrate the win. First, they intend to take a family trip to Niagara Falls. Next year, they are planning a larger vacation with an Alaskan cruise.

The winning scratch-off ticket that secured Morrell’s place on the show was purchased at Convenient Food Mart #3017, located at 21996 Lorain Road in Fairview Park.
