Alabama – In a horrific incident in Alabama, a 70-year-old man, identified as J. Black, is once again facing serious criminal charges after authorities say he brutally assaulted his elderly mother, the same woman he was previously convicted of abusing just three years ago. The disturbing repeat offense has renewed scrutiny on how the system handles elder abuse cases and whether enough is being done to protect vulnerable seniors from violent family members.
According to the sheriff’s office, Black has been charged with second-degree elder abuse after investigators confirmed that he severely beat his 95-year-old mother, leaving her with two black eyes and multiple injuries on her arms and legs. Black was arrested on November 25, 2025, and booked into the county’s detention center, where he is currently being held on a $30,000 bond. Authorities emphasized that this incident is not the first time Black has faced violence-related charges involving his mother. Court records show he was previously arrested for the exact same crime in April 2022. He later pleaded guilty in January 2025 and was placed on two years of probation, which he was still serving at the time of the new allegations.
The incident came to light on the morning of November 23, 2025, when the victim’s other son approached a sheriff’s deputy on patrol. He told deputies that his brother had assaulted their mother. Inside his vehicle was the elderly woman, visibly battered and extremely frail. Deputies reported that the woman had two black eyes, as well as band-aids on her arms and legs, indicating fresh injuries. When officers asked what had happened, the 95-year-old explained that her other son, Black, had struck her and that it was not the first time. She stated the assault occurred at her home, where she lives independently despite her age. Authorities described the victim’s condition as heartbreaking and disturbing. Not only had she been beaten, but her injuries suggested she had been left without proper care following the attack.
As deputies proceeded with the investigation and initiated the arrest of Black, they discovered that the elderly woman’s claims of repeated abuse were tragically accurate. Records confirmed that Black had been arrested in 2022 for the same offense, with his mother as the victim. Despite pleading guilty earlier this year and receiving probation instead of prison time, he allegedly went back to the elderly woman’s home and assaulted her again. This revelation has raised serious concerns about the decision to place him on probation rather than behind bars, especially considering his mother’s advanced age and vulnerability.
While Black now sits behind bars awaiting court proceedings, authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the case to come forward. Investigators believe there may have been more incidents of abuse that were never reported. The sheriff’s office stressed that elder abuse often goes unreported due to fear, isolation, or dependence on the abuser. In this case, it appears the victim had suffered silently for a long time until help finally arrived through her other son’s intervention. Black’s next court appearance has not yet been scheduled, but prosecutors are expected to push for stronger penalties given his history and the severity of the new allegations.
