17-year-old boy described as “very kind and respectful” died at his workplace after a vehicle pulled up at the drive through and occupants opened fire, hitting the boy in the head

Illinois – In a harrowing incident that has left residents in Illinois shocked, a 17-year-old boy described by neighbors as “very kind and respectful” was gunned down while working at his job in a fast-food restaurant. The young victim, identified as Rodrigo F., was shot in the head when a vehicle pulled up to the drive-through window and its occupants opened fire.

Detectives with the Police Department’s Area One Division are investigating the killing as a targeted act of violence, though no suspects have yet been identified or charged. Authorities confirmed that the shooter fled the scene in a dark-colored Jeep SUV, leaving the teenager fatally wounded inside the restaurant. No arrests have been made, and police continue to appeal to the public for information.

The deadly shooting unfolded around 7 p.m. on Sunday. Rodrigo, a high school senior, was working behind the drive-through window of the fast-food restaurant when the gunfire erupted. Witnesses told police that a Jeep Cherokee drove up to the window, where a customer was being served. When Rodrigo slid open the partition to assist, one or more people inside the SUV began firing multiple rounds. One bullet struck the 17-year-old in the head.

Officers responding to the scene found Rodrigo critically injured and rushed him to a hospital. Despite the efforts of first responders and trauma doctors, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. A police report confirmed that surveillance footage captured the shooting, showing the vehicle pulling up and speeding away seconds later. Authorities have not yet determined a motive. Whether the attack was random or deliberate remains unclear, but the senselessness of the violence has devastated the family and neighborhood.

Rodrigo’s loved ones remember him as gentle, hardworking, and kind. His mother told local reporters that her son loved soccer, video games, and drinking coffee with her in the mornings. His brother shared an emotional message on a GoFundMe page, writing, “He was a 17-year-old boy who enjoyed working and being with his family and friends. Rodrigo was a nice, gentle, smart young man. He never did any wrong to anyone or ever wanted to harm anyone.”

A neighbor, S. Romero, echoed that sentiment, telling local news sources, “No parties, quiet people, very kind, respectful boys.” The family, she said, was peaceful and hardworking—not the kind of people anyone would expect to be touched by gunfire. The attack has also reignited fear across the community, where residents say random shootings have become a grim reality. “I don’t know why they would have shot him,” Romero added. “It just doesn’t make sense.”

Detectives are reviewing the video footage and witness statements as they work to trace the SUV involved in the shooting. Officials have confirmed that the case remains open, with homicide investigators pursuing several leads. No suspects have been arrested, and no formal charges have been filed. Police continue to urge anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that tips from the public could be crucial to identifying those responsible.

In the meantime, Franco’s family is left to plan a funeral rather than celebrate the future he had been working toward. The 17-year-old had been saving money from his part-time job while finishing high school, with hopes of helping his family and continuing his studies. His death — sudden, brutal, and senseless — has left a silence in the home where laughter once lived. And while detectives search for answers, one thing remains certain: a boy remembered as “very kind and respectful” will never come home again.
