27-year-old father, who fatally beat his 2-month-old daughter, inflicting 26 rib fractures, just because she was crying while he was on the gaming console, learns his fate

Virginia – In a shocking case that horrified communities across Virginia, a 27-year-old man, identified as L. Holloway, has been handed a decades‑long prison sentence after being found guilty of brutally beating his 2‑month‑old daughter to death. Authorities say he lashed out simply because the baby’s crying interrupted his gaming. The court’s decision now brings closure, though not comfort, to a tragedy born of rage and neglected responsibility.

Holloway was convicted in August 2023 by a jury of second‑degree murder and child abuse for the death of his infant daughter. After a three‑day trial, the jury found that Holloway’s violent actions caused the child’s death. On sentencing, the court imposed a 50‑year prison term, with 20 years suspended — meaning Holloway will spend 30 years behind bars. The judge departed substantially above the sentencing guidelines, citing the severity of the injuries, the age of the victim, and the brutal nature of the assault. Although prosecutors’ guidelines suggested a sentence of about 23 years, the judge deemed the case so egregious that a harsher penalty was required to reflect the gravity of the crime.

According to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office, the tragedy unfolded on December 20, 2019, in Holloway’s home. At that time, Holloway was the sole caregiver for the infant.  During the crime, family members reported hearing Holloway screaming obscenities at the baby. In the moments that followed, the baby’s crying ceased, and she was later found unresponsive. The timing suggested a connection between the outburst and the fatal injuries. First responders arrived to find the infant critically injured. She was immediately rushed to the hospital and placed on life support but unfortunately died several days later when efforts to save her failed.

The autopsy report revealed the shocking extent of the violence. The girl had 26 rib fractures, marks across her chest wall, a fractured clavicle, a skull fracture, bruising around her eyes, and a massive brain hemorrhage. Medical examiners concluded that the injuries resulted from abusive head trauma rather than accidental harm. Holloway’s criminal past played a role in how prosecutors and the court viewed his culpability. At the time of his indictment in October 2021, Holloway was already serving time on charges of child abuse and neglect from another case. He also had convictions for felony eluding, hit-and-run, DUI, carrying a concealed weapon (second offense), petit larceny, and failure to appear in court.

These prior offenses contributed to the view that Holloway posed an ongoing danger to vulnerable individuals, especially children. That record no doubt influenced both the prosecution’s push for a stiff sentence and the judge’s willingness to exceed guidelines. The judge’s decision to impose 50 years reflects more than just retribution. In court, prosecutors emphasized that an infant’s life had been extinguished over something as trivial — and preventable — as a crying child and video gaming. The age of the victim, the multiplicity of bone fractures, and the cruel disregard for human life all compelled the harsher ruling.

For the child’s family, no sentence can erase the pain or bring back the little girl. But the verdict vindicates their grief and demands accountability for a father who abandoned the most basic obligations a parent should owe: protection and safety. Over the three decades Holloway will likely spend behind bars, the memory of what he did — and how needlessly it was done — will endure as a haunting example of how unchecked anger and neglect can consume a life before it ever truly began.
