80-year-old man, who waited for his 54-year-old wife he knew was cheating on him to fall asleep only so he could ambush her and shoot her to death, learns his fate

Colorado – In a chilling case in Colorado, an 80-year-old man, identified as Stephen C., who meticulously planned the murder of his 54-year-old wife, identified as Jian C., will never walk free again, as he had recently been sentenced to life in prison. The conviction follows a brutal killing that was not only deliberate but methodical—carried out while the victim slept, executed with precision, and confessed to without hesitation.

Stephen stood trial and was found guilty of first-degree murder, assault by strangulation, and kidnapping after he ambushed Jian as she slept. The verdict came nearly a year after Stephen walked into a police station and calmly admitted to killing his wife. According to court records, this wasn’t a moment of rage—it was the climax of a plan set in motion long before that September night in 2024. Stephen had grown increasingly bitter over what he believed was years of theft and infidelity. He accused Jian of stealing money, vegetables from his garden, and his cooking pans. He told detectives he knew she had a boyfriend—an accusation that eventually led to what he called a final confrontation.

“He confronted her about what she did with his cooking pans, about her boyfriend, about some things the boyfriend had said about her, and about her boyfriend’s address.” Though Jian initially denied the affair, Stephen told investigators that she fell silent when he gave more detail. At that point, he claimed, she asked what he wanted from her. He responded that “she had to pay a great price.” Then, he waited. Not with second thoughts, but with resolve.

That night, once Jian was asleep, Stephen carried out his plan. He tied her up, gagged her using a bathrobe belt, and dragged her into the car. He returned inside, unlocked a safe to retrieve his handgun, and took a drink of water before leaving. He placed her in the back seat and drove to a nearby pond. There, alone and restrained, she was shot twice in the chest. Her body was abandoned by the water.

Just hours later, a neighbor discovered Jian’s body and alerted authorities. By then, Stephen had already made a 911 call, stating he wanted to turn himself in for killing his wife. He showed up at the police department and confessed to the murder. He declined legal representation and told investigators the full story of what he had done. He revealed that they had met 26 years earlier, but their relationship started falling apart over time. He said they had stopped speaking two years before her death. Still, they lived under the same roof—a home steeped in silence, suspicion, and seething anger.

In April, Stephen’s legal team attempted to offer a plea deal—manslaughter in place of murder—but prosecutors refused. The case proceeded to trial, and a jury convicted him of all charges: first-degree murder, assault by strangulation, and kidnapping. On Monday, the sentence was handed down: life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus 32 years for assault and another six for the kidnapping conviction. What began with suspicions and silence ended in irreversible violence. The sentence ensures that Stephen, who once waited patiently for his wife to fall asleep before binding, gagging, and killing her, will never walk free again.
