9-week-pregnant mother of 2 died after her husband “applied pressure to her neck,” strangling the woman to death before calling 911, claiming he woke up to find her unresponsive

Texas – In a chilling development in Texas, a 38-year-old man, identified as L. Gilley, faces charges of capital murder following the death of his 38-year-old wife, C. Bauer, and their unborn child. Authorities arrested Gilley after allegations surfaced that he strangled his wife to death, contradicting his claim that she had taken her own life by overdose. This grave incident unfolded in their, leading to Gilley’s booking without bond on Friday, October 11, just days after the tragic event.

The case unfolded when Gilley called 911, reporting that he had discovered his wife unresponsive due to an apparent overdose. According to Gilley, he and his wife had an argument before he went to bed. He told first responders that when he woke up three hours later, he found Bauer in a dire state and attempted CPR, claiming she had taken her own life.

However, the reality as determined by medical professionals painted a starkly different picture. Upon Bauer’s arrival at the hospital, where she was declared dead, both the attending hospital physician and the medical examiner found evidence of strangulation, not an overdose. The autopsy revealed injuries consistent with being strangled, and further investigation led to suspicions about the nature of her death.

According to court documents, prosecutors said that on October 7, Gilley “intentionally and knowingly caused” Bauer’s death by applying “pressure to [her] neck and upper back,” resulting in the death of both her and their unborn child.

The couple, who had been married since 2017 after a long acquaintance that started at university, seemed to have a life filled with past romance, which included a fairy-tale engagement. Yet, the reality inside their home appeared much darker. Court documents highlighted that Gilley acknowledged during the investigation that his wife was not suicidal nor known to use drugs, which conflically contrasted with his initial report to the authorities.

The legal documents stated, “Defendant admitted wife not suicidal and not a drug user,” highlighting a significant inconsistency in Gilley’s account of the events. At the time of the alleged murder, only the couple and their two small children were present in the home, placing intense scrutiny on Gilley’s version of the events that led to Bauer’s tragic death. Medical professionals played a crucial role in identifying inconsistencies in Gilley’s account, leading to his arrest and the capital murder charge.

As the community reels from this shocking incident, plans for a candlelight vigil for Bauer have been set for Tuesday night. This event aims to honor her memory and provide a space for communal mourning.

As Gilley remains incarcerated awaiting further legal proceedings, the case continues to develop. With no bond granted and the severe nature of the charges, the focus remains on uncovering the full truth behind Bauer’s death and ensuring justice is served for her and her unborn child. The case has deeply affected the community, igniting discussions about domestic violence and the importance of thorough investigations in situations where initial appearances may be deceiving.
