56-year-old man died after his 56-year-old wife he had an argument with on the way home from a funeral stabbed him three times in the leg; woman charged

Tennessee – In a shocking incident in Tennessee, a 56-year-old man, identified as Derrick C., died after being stabbed three times in the leg by his 56-year-old wife, identified as Sheila C., during a heated argument—an act that prosecutors say triggered the car crash that followed and ultimately ended his life. Authorities have since charged Sheila with second-degree murder in the death of her husband as disturbing details continue to surface.

The case began on the night of November 29 when deputies from the sheriff’s office were dispatched to an intersection regarding a report about a crash. Just before 10 p.m., they arrived to find a vehicle veered off into a ditch. Emergency responders were already at the scene, fighting to save Derrick, the sole occupant and driver of the vehicle, who was bleeding heavily and slipping away.

At first glance, the damage to the vehicle appeared minimal—certainly not enough to explain the blood loss. But then came a revelation that shifted the entire narrative. Paramedics treating Derrick at the scene reported that he told them outright: “My wife stabbed me.” It was a statement made in his final conscious moments, and it cracked open what investigators now describe as a fatal domestic attack. Derrick was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:49 p.m. Medical personnel noted three stab wounds on his left leg—injuries so severe that they became a contributing factor to the crash. The pool of blood soaking the driver’s side floorboard confirmed just how grave those wounds were.

Detectives quickly launched an investigation, and the pieces began to fall into place. Through interviews and forensic analysis, authorities determined that Derrick had not been injured in the collision itself. Instead, he had been stabbed beforehand by his wife inside the vehicle during an argument. According to the arrest affidavit, the couple had just attended a funeral and were driving home when tempers flared. Sheila later admitted they had argued but insisted that Derrick had dropped her off at home before the crash occurred.

But that story began to unravel fast. Detectives found Sheila’s purse, luggage, phone, and work ID inside the crashed truck—clear signs she had been in the vehicle far more recently than she claimed. A family member who later picked up Sheila and her mother told investigators he found them roughly two miles from the crash scene. He also recalled Sheila’s mother explaining they needed a ride because Sheila and Derrick had “gotten into it” on the way home. The motive for the stabbing remains unclear, and Sheila has refused to discuss the specifics of the argument. What authorities do know is that the marriage had a documented history of domestic violence—conflict that, this time, escalated to a deadly outcome.

Sheila is now being held at the county jail on a $500,000 bond as she awaits further court proceedings. The second-degree murder charge carries the possibility of decades in prison if she’s convicted. A bond hearing is scheduled, during which the court will assess whether she remains a flight risk or danger to others. Derrick’s death marks a tragic end to what officials say was a long-troubled relationship. What began as a somber return home from a funeral ended in fatal violence—leaving a family fractured and a community stunned.
