44-year-old woman died after 46-year-old husband she filed for a protective order against as he repeatedly assaulted her shot her to death in front of their 4 children; husband arrested

Indiana – In a shocking incident in Indiana, a 46-year-old man, identified as Cecil M., is facing a murder charge after police say he shot his 44-year-old wife, identified as Jeri M., to death in their driveway, just days after she filed for a protective order detailing years of violence and threats. Cecil was arrested and charged with murder in the killing of Jeri, a mother of four who had recently taken legal steps to escape what court documents describe as an escalating and dangerous pattern of abuse.

Court records show that on Christmas Day, at 10:28 a.m., Jeri filed a petition for a protective order against her husband, citing domestic and family violence. In the filing, she described repeated assaults and threats that spanned months. Because the petition was filed on a holiday, court offices were closed, and a judge was unable to review or sign the order before her death. In the petition, Jeri described an incident on Christmas Eve in which her husband allegedly threw kitchen tongs that struck her arm, leaving a laceration and bruising. She also detailed a confrontation days earlier in a parking lot after she told him she wanted a divorce. According to the filing, he threatened to kill her and himself and later threatened to do so in front of their children. Jeri said she had recorded the interaction.

The petition also laid out a history of violence: a November incident where Cecil allegedly punched her in the face, causing her nose to bleed and leaving visible bruises; a December 10 argument in which he punched her computer, sending hot chocolate spilling over her; and an earlier episode where he shattered the driver’s side window of her truck. Jeri wrote that he had threatened to kill her, their children, and their pets multiple times, and that the protective order was meant to be a critical step toward safety. Three days later, on December 28, police say those fears became reality. At 2:17 p.m., police officers were called to the family’s home for an incident involving a weapon. One of the couple’s children called 911, telling dispatchers that their father “had a gun and he shot their mother … then fled the scene” in a gray vehicle. Officers arrived to find Jeri lying on the ground in the driveway, suffering from gunshot wounds. She was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but she did not survive.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the couple’s 19-year-old son told officers he saw his father waving a gun at his mother near the front door. He followed them outside and watched as his father shot her in the driveway. The teen immediately called 911 and tried to help his mother until first responders arrived. The couple’s other children, ages 17, 14, and 10, also gave statements. They told police they heard gunshots and saw their father arguing with their mother earlier that afternoon. The two younger children made additional 911 calls, while the 17-year-old stayed in his room after witnessing his older brother attempt to intervene.

After fleeing the scene, Cecil was spotted by an officer driving northbound several miles away. Police conducted a traffic stop and took him into custody without incident. While being read his Miranda rights, he requested a lawyer and did not provide a statement. Cecil now faces a preliminary charge of murder and remains jailed without bond. The protective order Jeri filed was processed through the court system the day after she was killed, without ever being ruled on by a judge.

Jeri is remembered by friends as a loving, hardworking mother who was deeply involved in her community. She had once run an in-home daycare, participated in her homeowners’ association, and often shared her struggles privately in online mom groups, where many offered prayers and support. She leaves behind four children, ages 19, 17, 14, and 10, whose lives were forever changed in a single afternoon. A GoFundMe established for the family describes the children as having “endured more than any child should,” noting that “all their lives have changed.” As the case moves forward, it stands as a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of domestic violence—and of a woman who sought help but did not receive protection in time.
