40-year-old man, who randomly fired at cars on a rural road while high on meth and fatally struck an 8-year-old boy traveling with his family, learns his fate

South Carolina – In a horrific case in South Carolina that left a young child dead and several others injured, a 40-year-old man, identified as C. Allen, has learned he will spend the rest of his life in prison after randomly firing at passing vehicles along a rural road. Allen pleaded guilty to one count of murder and five counts of attempted murder for the shooting that killed the 8-year-old boy, identified as Q. Dunham, and wounded others traveling in nearby vehicles.

Authorities said the charges stemmed from a random and violent attack on May 28, 2022, when Allen fired multiple shots at passing cars from his property. Prosecutors said the gunfire struck several vehicles, leaving a young boy fatally wounded and multiple victims injured. After entering his guilty plea in court, Allen was sentenced to life in prison for the murder conviction. He also received 30 years in prison for each of the five attempted murder charges. Court records show that several additional charges originally filed against him were dropped as part of the case’s resolution.

The deadly attack unfolded on a rural road located roughly 90 miles east of the capital city of South Carolina. According to investigators, Allen was inside or near his home when he began firing weapons toward passing traffic. Authorities later said he used both a rifle and a shotgun during the attack. Law enforcement officials described the shooting as completely random. Sheriff T. Joye said there was no clear motive behind the violence. “No motive. Just probably methed up. He’s got a history,” Joye said at the time. “He’s incarcerated now without incident. Just a senseless, senseless act.”

One of the vehicles traveling along the road that day was carrying a family visiting South Carolina from New Hampshire. Inside the car was 8-year-old Dunham, who had been enjoying a vacation with his family. As the car passed Allen’s property, gunfire suddenly erupted. A bullet struck Dunham in the neck, critically injuring the young boy. A woman riding in the same vehicle was also hit by gunfire but survived. Emergency responders rushed to the scene and the injured victims were transported to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Dunham’s injuries were too severe. The child was later taken off life support, and his death devastated his family and community.

Investigators soon discovered that the attack did not stop with the single vehicle carrying Dunham and his family. Authorities said Allen fired at two additional vehicles traveling along the same road during the incident. In one of those vehicles was Dunham’s father, who was driving at the time. He was also struck by gunfire but survived the shooting. The widespread gunfire left investigators stunned at the scale of the attack. “It’s sad. It’s heartbreaking,” Sheriff Joye said while describing the tragedy. “We’ve got an 8-year-old shot for no reason. No reason.” Following the shootings, law enforcement agencies quickly mobilized to locate the suspect.

Members of a SWAT team responded to Allen’s property after authorities identified him as the suspected shooter. When officers arrived, Allen had returned to his home. He was taken into custody without further violence. Investigators later discovered a large cache of weapons at the property, further raising concerns about the potential danger posed during the incident. Allen was arrested and charged with multiple crimes tied to the shooting. Those charges initially included murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and several counts related to firing into vehicles.

As the case moved through the court system, Allen ultimately chose to plead guilty to the most serious charges. During the sentencing hearing, Allen’s attorney told the court that his client accepted responsibility for his actions. According to reports from inside the courtroom, the attorney said Allen reacted with shame when he learned that the shooting had taken the life of a child. Allen himself also spoke during the hearing and offered an apology.

The death of Dunham sent shockwaves through both the community where the shooting happened and the town where the boy lived. Dunham was a third-grade student. With Allen now sentenced to life in prison, the legal proceedings surrounding the case have reached their conclusion. For the Dunham family, however, the loss remains immeasurable. What began as a family vacation ended in a tragedy that took the life of an 8-year-old boy whose future was cut short by a senseless act of violence.
